Which Riesling are you drinking?

Looks amazing!

Do you mind sharing your source? I bought this case from Cru and Domaine in Portland; sourced another bottle from Vinopolis, who doubts they will be getting anymore, and purchased two more cases, to ship in the fall, from Woodland Hills Wine Co. I am crossing my fingers the latter will be a consistent source.

Nice note (and story), Scott! Glad you like the wine!

Thanks for saving me from decision paralysis! I am eager to see how the other wines compare.

Me too. There are some great wines there. Volxem Scharzhofberger, a bunch of Dr Pauley Bergweiler, von Simmern Marcobrunn, Johannishof Geisenheimer Marienthal, even a couple bocksbeutels of Hofkeller Würzburg 71 Würzbuger Stein Auslese, Schloss Eltz various bottlings. Fun. These were all from one private cellar.

I am in Europe, sorry I can’t help you. But it’s just as difficult for me; I see multiple websites offering wines that I desperately want to buy, but they don’t ship out of their country or won’t ship to my country of residence :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

The majority of Stefan’s wine sold in the U.S. are sold through Fass Selections (Lyle Fass) or Down to Earth (Robert Panzer). These are dtc models that ship a couple times per year.

Woodland Hills used to grey market some however the German buyer left last year.

His US importer does not actually sell much as far as I know.

I have no idea where all Steinmetz’s wines ends up as I don’t really know any bigger German retailer selling more than a couple of (more basic) wines via online shops from him anymore. Wines used to be widely available but not anymore. Maybe a couple of 100p rated wines raised local demand dunno.

I actually had an email exchange with Steinmetz’s US importer a few years ago to inquire about where I could get the wines. To say they were uninterested is an understatement.

Which one  He has switched multiple times! Currently with Cork Hoarder who really has no experience with German wine.

He does have great French and Spanish wines.

It was Broadbent back then.

Holy hell this is good. Nose was a bit quiet but expansive palate was acidity throughout. Beautifully balanced sweetness with apple, pear, citrus, minerals. Insane value, this is a case buy. 2021 Kabis are so so good and should age beautifully.

    91-92, could be 93+ with a 10-15y of age. (92 points)

This was awesome especially for the price. Think I’ve been bit by the riesling bug!!

Totally agree. I tried all the MFR 21 Kabis and the GH was definitely my favorite.

AFAIK, Dennis has been, and still is, the German buyer for Woodland Hills. Were you thinking of someone else?

I heard he left. When was the last time you talked to him?

On December 1st of last year, for sure — cross-referencing my purchase history, I know I talked to him about a few of the wines I bought that day. Admittedly, I do not recall seeing him when I stopped-by in February and March of this year.

Really unfortunate if he’s gone. Would love to know anything more you might know about why he left (assuming he did), and where he went. PM is good, if you’d rather.

ETA: craaaaap … I don’t see him featured in the “Our Team” section of their website; given the length of his tenure there, I would very much expect him to appear there. … hmmmm, I’m going to have to ask some questions next time I’m in. Such a bummer … he made that store my #1 for German Riesling. It would be devastating if their selection turns for the worse.

what is bizarre is that I had to be one of their biggest German customers and no one other than a shipping person has ever called me! You know the old adage the easiest customer to win is the one you already have!

Oh, same here — nobody has ever called me from there. But I do stop-in a few times per year, and try to grab someone’s ear whenever I do (historically, Dennis has been the person I most like talking with).

Max Ferd. Richter 2018 Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr Grosses Gewachs:

Intense palate on a rather light frame - a combination that works very well for me. Pineapple, honey, flint, salt, celery, and pepper. Somewhat creamy, and the finish has some staying power. It’s not the most profound expression, but it’s hard to find any fault with this for $30.
