Mia and Gisela are my favorites too. Forster and Kugel Peter are really good as well. Palm is my favorite among the Feinherb; Altenberg Spat (7) among the Trocken. And the Rose is very nice.
This was pretty damn good. It was a botrytis bomb, not a zippy “clean” Eiswein. But still retaining enough acidity and surprisingly even some Saarstein character through all the toffee and caramelly sweetness from the botrytis. Color was deep brown, like a Foreau Gouttes D’Or. I’m not sure how to describe it but I get a leafy, piney character in all Saarstein wines and I really like it. The grapes they made this from must have been interesting to see…frozen raisin looking things.
Pretty cool that you still have some of those older Saarstein bottles. I think I have one left…somewhere!
Our Riesling levels were running very low after two weeks of mostly champagne and sake in Japan. While it’s surprisingly difficult to source Riesling in Hong Kong, we found this locally and it delivered to the hotel prior to our arrival, along with several other bottles. It showed a bit watery at first, but opened up respectably and showed an attractive and easy drinking profile. Not a great bottle at this point, and probably never will be. Still we were very happy to have it, and it matched nicely with courses 2 and 3 of our Peking Duck.
This was dry, medium bodied with lots of ripe peach and floral notes. Acidity was medium.
First time having anything by this producer. Also have a bottle of their '21 Riesling Grand Cru Brand Clos De La Treille which I will give some more cellar time before trying.
Keller - Von der Fels 2023
Apple, citrus, apricot, light grapefruit, white flowers, mineralic. Fresh, juicy, medium+ body, balanced and long lasting. Nice base from Keller with good potential.
The Herrenweg de Turckheim Weinlagen
Thanks, I am aware of that website and have it bookmarked on my computer. Really like using it for locating the vineyards in Germany.
You can use weinlagen-info in the mobile version on the smart phone like an app by adding it to the home screen. When you roam wine regions you can zoom to your location and see which vineyards are around you. Weinlagen
Max Ferd. Richter - Veldenzer Elisenberg Kabinett 2015
Straw yellow color. Citrus, grapefruit, ripe peach, berries, tropical notes, yellow flowers, mineralic. Fresh and salty, medium+ body, balanced and long lasting. Feels still pretty sweet but is in a nice spot. With potential, got better and better with air.
2022 Andreas Laible Stollenberg Riesling GG
It’s been many years since I’ve had a Laible, so was happy to taste one again, especially since this was so delicious! Everything in exquisite balance: juicy succulent fruit but also fresh sleek and firm structure with great definition. Many years ago I remember the Laible wines having a slight rustic edge, which I didn’t mind. This bottle was more polished suave and sexy, but still filled with character. Consider me impressed with the developments and will be happy to drink more of these recent wines.
Not enough information! Which Laible?
Ha! Andreas. I edited. I know his brother Alexander has a label, but I don’t think Alexander has Stollenberg (or any GG Rieslings for that matter). Have you had the Alexander Laible wines? Is there another Laible?
Wasn’t the father Andreas as well? There was a time I would drink (Alexander) Laible, Thousand Stars and all. Until I got choosy and decided for myself that they drink too much like a Weissburgunder, and I never looked back… Baden is rarely associated with Riesling.
Stimmt! The father and son are Andreas, maybe part of the stylistic evolution I detected was from more influence of the son.
Either way, yes, Baden may not be the most famous place for riesling, but that doesn’t mean they are not delicious! I hesitate to generalize because I hardly have comprehensive experience with the region, but the ones I’ve enjoyed all have a firm linearity and minerality that is much appreciated. Schloss Neuweier, nearby Beurer.
But yes, we are spoiled for choice with great riesling…
2007 Muller-Catoir Haardter Burgergarten spatlese
Had as a BYO at a restaurant matched with Coquille St. Jacques. This is an outstanding wine, really full bodied, almost heavy and unctuous in that department, serious depth of character with loads of pineapple, peach, and spiciness on the nose. Deepening color, darkish-medium gold. 4 (out of 5), perhaps 4+ if it had been served in something better than standard restaurant glassware. This is why we buy German riesling and forget about it in the cellar for 15+ years.
Always solid juice.
