Which Riesling are you drinking?

We had a few tonight. The 2001 Kabinett flight was excellent. All 3 wines were outstanding, the weakest was the Donnhoff. My favorite was the Willi Schaefer, and that and the JJ Prum seemed like they had more evolution to go to me. 2005 Spatlese was also great, the Grunhaus was so Grunhaus. Vollenweider WG was probably the weakest wine but still good. And JJ Prum is still so young.

@mlawton - how was the Diel?

The Auslese flight, while good, wasn’t as good as the other two. The Diel was nice but needed more time, as did the Prum Auslese. The Prum was Prum. Always good, always distinctive. The Diel was different, some felt more earthy (in a good way) but it definitely was a good, young auslese that was different from all the other wines last night in taste. The Haag had outgrown its acidity allocation and presented very sweet without enough balancing acidity. It had a gold capsule, not sure if that means anything for Haag.

Diel always has an earthy element to it IME. Distinctive, but I need to be in the mood for it.

We didn’t have any note-takers with us, and everyone who was there probably has different opinions on specifics - I was the minority opinion that I thought that the 2001 Prum and Schaefer needed more time still - but I’ll answer any question I can. I think we all agreed that they were all delicious and so those that I identified as “weaker” were not by any means bad wines, and would have probably shone brightly on their own, but the Vollenweider Spatlese for example was a bit in the shadows of the Grunhaus and Prum. I’m a big Vollenweider fan so I’m sure that is an excellent wine, just not as special last night.

This was my first time trying the Meyer Nepal and I’m very interested to see how they age.

I was in New Orleans this weekend. Twice, I drank a 2022 Stein Palmberg alte reben trocken wine. Friday it was a spatlese. Saturday it was a kabinett (the spatlese was too expensive on the list, especially in light of what I had paid retail for Friday’s bottle). Spatlese was terric. Kabinett came across as tart and was drunk too cold and without time to open up (unfortunately 7 people on the bottle so not much opportunity to let it sit so I could try it again later).

I think these are the first Stein rieslings I’ve had. I look forward to trying more.

Which Fritz Haag is that? I had the Brauneberger Juffer Riesling Auslese #20 recently, and the way you describe your bottle is pretty spot-on for how my bottle was.

Which Battenfeld-Spanier is that, and how was it?

Which Kuhling-Gillot is that, and how was it?

That Donnhoff appears to be the Oberhauser Leistenberg Kabinett, yes? Which vintage and how was that one?

They age well. Meyer Nepal is a parcel of old vines high up in Niedermenniger Herrenberg.

The panel at Vinum tasted ten years after 2014 Riesling Spätlesen, including auction wines, from various regions. Five Saar wines placed in the top ten, with four in the top four. Scharzhofberger (Egon Müller), Kanzemer Altenberg (von Othegraven), and Krettnacher Euchariusberg (Hofgut Falkenstein) were the top three finishers.

Which Fritz Haag is that? I had the Brauneberger Juffer Riesling Auslese #20 recently, and the way you describe your bottle is pretty spot-on for how my bottle was. (I don’t have the AP#, it was Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr 2005 and had a gold capsule)

Which Battenfeld-Spanier is that, and how was it? (2020 Molsheim and it was good. I liked the Kuhling Gillot more, it seemed to have more elegance and depth. )

Which Kuhling-Gillot is that, and how was it? (2021 Pettenthal, and I liked it a lot. My favorite of that flight over the Keller, but others did not agree)

That Donnhoff appears to be the Oberhauser Leistenberg Kabinett, yes? Which vintage and how was that one? (2001, and it was good and at peak from a very cold cellar - mine. I don’t see it getting better with more time. I did prefer the 2001 Willi Schaefer Himmelreich and the 2001 Prum WS Kabinetts but I’m generally predisposed to MSR wines over others…except for dry)

We didn’t taste blind so label subjectivity can also be a factor but I know I tried to be objective.

With Rieslingfeier closing in I am using it as an excuse to drink more Riesling then I already do and this 1994 J.B Becker Kabinett Halbtrocken is next level. Opened on Friday and drank through the weekend. Lemon, Lime, with a crazy prominent mint & floral quality that is just so enchanting alongside the fresh fruit. Wish I bought more of these.

The 1999 Ludes Kabinett Trocken is no slouch especially for $35 at Crush. Quite herbal and smokey a bit of melon / honeydew and some sharp lemon acidity on the palate. Fun to have some KT with age.

About 7 years ago I drank my first bottle of Ulli Stein Riesling in New Orleans too, at Coquette. I have fond memories of the meal and the wine, and and try and buy a few bottles every year when I can find them.
