2008 Vollenweider Kröver Steffensberg Riesling Spätlese - wow, intense yet lifted.
finally got around to transcription …
2022 Weingut Hermann Ludes Thörnicher Ritsch Riesling Kabinett feinherb Gackes Unten - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (8/26/2024)
– first glass poured approximately 1 hr. before initial taste –
– tasted blind over 3.5 hrs on Day 1, next to the 2022 Gackes Oben Feinherb; revisited on Days 2 and 3, also blind; this one was labelled as #1 –
– screwcap –
NOSE: buzzy gooseberry/sweet/dragonfruit/lychee mélange; high-pitched, white-fruited, and expressive.
BODY: medium-light green-yellow color; medium-bodied; a little “pshhhh” upon unscrewing on Day 2.
TASTE: light petrol; high acidity helps keep its slight sweetness in check — it’s almost a touch tannic; limey; one really has to pick nits to tell these two apart (Oben and Unten) — qualitatively, they’re within a point of each other — which one tastes best oscillates, and depends on which is first approached after a few minutes’ break (first off the break is better). Day 2: red grapes note (or a grapes fruit leather); high acidity. Day 3: continues to present higher-pitched, or more white-fruited, than #2 (Gackes Oben); sooooo easy to drink, and 100% delicious! Absolutely love this, as I do the other Ludes Feinherb tasted alongside … Boom! … in my happy zone!

2022 Weingut Hermann Ludes Thörnicher Ritsch Riesling Kabinett feinherb Gackes oben - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (8/26/2024)
– first glass poured approximately 1 hr. before initial taste –
– tasted blind over 3.5 hrs on Day 1, next to the 2022 Gackes Unten Feinherb; revisited on Days 2 and 3, also blind; this one was labelled as #2 –
– screwcap –
NOSE: more subdued than #1 (Gackes Unten); moderately expressive; bit darker/deeper-pitched than #1, but they’re not drastically different. Day 3: yellow stone fruits, as compared to the white stone fruit presentation of #1.
BODY: medium-light green-yellow color; medium-bodied; a little “pshhhh” upon unscrewing on Day 2.
TASTE: no petrol; limey (a bit more than the Gackes Unten); hint of smoky mineral; tart green grapes; incredibly moreish; with air (~ 3.5 hrs. after opening) this pulled into the lead over #1. Day 2: red grapes fruit leather, with high acidity (verrrrry similar to #1); 9.5% alc. hidden, as it is with #1. Love this wine, and this tasting proved to me it doesn’t really matter to me if I buy the Gackes Oben or Gackes Unten, as they’re far more similar than they are different.
I know this isn’t the first time I’ve disagreed with you about Ludes, but I was pleasantly surprised by how different they were (are).
(Disclaimer: Ludes is easily my favorite producer, so I’m extra perceptive to minutia.)
Hey, I think that’s cool! How would you characterize their differences, which do you prefer (and why?)?
I was recommended Ludes by Riesling OG @Robert_Dentice and it has now also become perhaps my favorite.
Next time I taste them together, I’ll be sure to put down my thoughts. IIRC, I preferred the Oben by a slight margin.
am I correct in assuming you’ve also tried Stein and Falkenstein?
I have, but it’s been a long time. I must revisit and compare.
Me too, apparently. My scant notes from 2022 say both excellent, with the Oben almost outstanding.
Had an unreal bottle of JJ Prum 1995 WS Whitecap last night. I wish I had a picture of the wine itself but it was in perfect condition. Almost no sign of aging visually but the nose was deeply complex, vanilla creme, spicy lemon & lime, and some tropicals that I normally only get from gold caps. The acidity was vibrant, and the palate was light, fresh, and surprisingly less weighty than most Auslese, which I loved. Wish I had more of these.
Carl Loewen - Laurentiuslay 2022
Light straw yellow, quite consitent in the glass. Citrus, peach, spices, white flowers, mineralic. Fresh and salty, medium+ body, balanced and long lasting. Open for business with some air, has further potential. Good for 2022!
Update on day two: more yellow fruit, spices, herbs. Nice value for money.
Maximin Grünhaus Riesling Abtsberg 2015
Light, clear color, nose with green apples, hints of lime and petroleum and lots of wet slate. Very precise and intense in the mouth, this wine does the trick of great wines; intensity, concentration and lightness at the same time. Minerals and slightly bitter citrus in a long and beautifully integrated taste curve, floral. With increasing temperature there comes a nice streak of ripe yellow fruit. Still young, but with enough age to have achieved balance. Light and at the same time intense, very Mosel.
Screwcap and a sweetness indice on the back label, no predikat on this, I think this is a very good idea. And a picture from one of my several visits, this from 2022.
