I think so.
If it makes you feel better, I bought these as part of an auction lot (a mixed ZH case) about 3 years ago. Of these two, the “lower” Herrenweg Turkheim VV was the better (half-)bottle—quite wonderful and vibrant.
Fellow 76er!
Thinking back to what I was drinking at the time, it was also low tariff stuff, but a different quality…
Which of his wines do you reccomend?
It is so hard as there are so many of them. The Rosengartchen is very special and the Hofberger Reserve. And try a couple of the Pinots.
Oh, um, I could also answer that question, as i’ve tasted them all a month ago and broke the internet with how long the 2023 offer is…
it is out now.
too many highlights to mention in short hand.
those pesky details.
The well-known german wine magazin Meininger Sommelier had the headline regarding 2023 „greatness through balance“
https://www.meininger.de/wein/verkostungen/riesling-gg-2023-perfekte-balance
„And I admire the balance or harmony of 2023“
Anybody try this?
Want to save them both for group tastings, but the curiosity is killing me. Pretty sure I can’t quote MFW here, so you can read the review here: 2016 Später-Veit Piesporter Goldtröpfchen Riesling Kabinett trocken Grand Reserve, Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer - CellarTracker
Some mighty fine Riesling, I reckon. Enveloping attack with hypomanic orange, lemon, shredded pineapple, and mango notes which are violently washed away with a wave of salty, stony, smoky mineral. Comes across as dry, almost bracing, but with a silky richness which makes wonder about the residual sugar content. Long, green tea inflected finish. I still have another, and as the kids like to say, “Dude, I am so stoked!”
I have a little under a case of this wine, from the 2014 vintage, coming in the fall. (Thank you, Fass Selections). I will soon learn just how much regret Is on the horizon, having drunk two cases of his dry wines young.
I drank some bottles when it was released (2020) and also re-tasted it a couple of years later. I liked it but a couple of bottles were enough and I also did not see that much of potential for further aging / improvements. It had some Jura-like oxidative things along with a bit of oak and creamy texture due to very long lees contact time with only 10.5% alc, lowish (well it’s 2016) acidity and basically no fruit at all so very different (some might even say illegal) and very geeky kabinett trocken . It has a bit of same vibes than some Stein’s Grenzgänger rieslings. Please report back how it’s working for you. It’s still available and I wonder if I’m wrong with it’s aging potential after all…
The 2014 is great. I emailed Lyle from Stefans dining room while tasting and told him I would take three cases if he offered it.
Apparently, people aren’t drinking enough Auslese, so I’m doing what I can to set a good example.
- 2001 Schloss Lieser Niederberg Helden Riesling Auslese *** - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (9/15/2024)
Nose: dried apricot, honey, beeswax, whipped cream, candied ginger
Palate: apricot pie filling, baking spice; medium to medium+ finish of ginger; lemon, honey, light baking spice, hint of mineral, faint hint of something tertiary I can't place; medium sweetness; medium body; high- acidity
Overall thoughts: Lighter on its feet and less botrytis than expected (I think 2019 Schloss Lieser Spatlesen, for example, are bigger than this). I like the hint of patina from age and the great tension, but I thought the finish was surprisingly a bit short. Great wine! (93 points)

My wife, who has a great palate, liked this more than me and scored it 96 points.
I am chomping at the bit to get my hands on them!
Yesterday we had:
Othegraven Altenberg Auslese 2017 - clean botrytis, sweet, vibrant. Good now, but better in 10 years
Othegraven Altenberg Spätlese Auction 2018 - closed at the moment.
Groebe Kirchspiel Auslese Auction 2017 - fat, tasty, concentrated. Let it age!
Weinhauerei Ried Bach Smaragd 2021 - fresh, mineralic,
Merkle Wildspontan Alte Reben 2022 (this is from Württemberg) - off dry, creamy, yeast and spices
**2015 Keller Absterde - For me 2015s have never really shut down. This was open and beautiful. A stunning wine in every way.
I declare the 2019 Falkenstein Altenberg Spätlese Trocken ready for early drinking!
- 2019 Hofgut Falkenstein Krettnacher Altenberg Riesling Spätlese trocken #7 - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (9/19/2024)
So much better than an unreviewed bottle from 2020. Back then, everything on it seemed so... neutral. Now, it's amped up to 7 (out of 11, he he he.) Color has deepened from neutral to light straw. Aromas of quartz and lime zest and lime flowers. Palate has delicious Pippin apple, lime and citric acid, along with some pebbles at the mid-palate. This was great with a chili crisp "Alfredo" with spinach. As the wine ages it should get much better. Excellent. (92 points)

Dropping this Konstantin Baum video here. I need to dip my toes into more GG Rieslings.
“weighty?” is perhaps the verbiage I’d use, but then again everyone describes wine differently.
I’m going to say Riesling
