Which Riesling are you drinking?

Exactly! I’ve gotten confused too many times, especially when decanters go back and forth between table and cellar/fridge to cool down from time to time, and when multiple people are pouring.

Really an elegant solution. Guess I need to grab a pack of mixed color rubber bands.

Thank you! It does work really well, much clearer than a sharpie mark and no clean up. I find rubber bands accumulate in our junk drawer in sufficient quantities to satisfy my needs. I don’t think I’ve ever bought any.

that is clever.

Thank you for the wedding wishes!

The mag of Riesling I opened was phenomenal. Admittedly my palate was a little blown out so some of the nuance was lost on me, but still.

Overwhelmingly golden apple and minerals with a balanced and delicate acidity. Long finish

How’s the Boxler?

The Boxler was quite nice. Showing its age some with notes of honey and orange. It was richer and a bit less focused than the Dönnhoff, which really seems to be hitting its stride. Both were lovely with homemade rosemary chicken pot pies (in honor of π day). I absolutely love the pairing of rosemary and dry riesling.

Making up for lost time on Riesling day I decided to open this today.

It’s everything I could ever want from an aged Mosel Spätlese. Just magic, like everything else from Selbach-Oster in 2001.

Totally agree on the 2001 Z-S Auslese.

This is great wine. The acid spine is bracing, but it’s integrated with plenty of fruit to create a wine of energy and intensity. Gorgeous, and doubtless a great life ahead of it.

I assume this wine is terrible. Has anyone here had it?

Terrible? No. Middling and kind of mediocre? Yeah, but I got no off flavors or technical flaws. I guess it depends on what your expectations are for an $18 375ml of BA. If you tried TJ’s wines that are labeled as “exclusive” like Barolo, Barbaresco, Chablis, etc. you know what to expect. Fits the legal definition, is basically correct as far as the flavor profile, but lacks excitement or wow factor. But maybe it will inspire someone to try more Riesling.

Thanks, Bill. I stopped at the store on my way home and grabbed a bottle for investigation. My expectations are low, but as long as it’s decent with tonight’s slightly-spicy arroz con pollo dinner I’ll be fine with it. will report back.

Prager Riesling Achleiten Smaragd 2017

Lovely wine with a cool and fresh nose, floral. Lime. Underlying fruit sweetness in a dry and very nicely balanced style with citrus and minerals in a refreshing finish with great length. Exceptionally elegant, acidic and balanced for a Smaragd wine from a vintage that can generally be a bit warm.

Wittmann Kirchspiel 2020 (on the way to the recycling bin)

Those need at least a few years of cellaring before turning the corner. Ripe but not overripe fruit: peach, yellow apples, goosberry, all kinds of citrussy things (the French would say argumes). Herbs (chamomilles), gently spiced, crushed pebbles, a touch of chalk. If you really go out to look for it, maybe a hint of petrol. Comes across as not 100% dry, with enough acidity to keep the tension going.
Not as austere as say Brunnenhauschen, a bit softer than the Keller version (more like their RR).
Fine.

The new riesling line from Moritz Kissinger and Jasmin Kissinger-Bähr. Stunning wines that really show the unique characteristics of their vineyards. They were extremely lucky to get small parcels in Hipping and Pettenthal and have produced some amazing dry and Kabinett wines from these hallowed sites. LEI Wine did an excellent job with the dinner.

p.s. The chards and sparkling were also fantastic! Germany is just so exciting!!!

Drank this earlier today on Keith’s back deck. Showed really well. Like a great, young, rich but balanced spatlese!

We were reminded it had been quite a while since we last opened a Lauer wine, so after some dithering over options for far too long, we chose the Peter Lauer Kupp Riesling Faß 18 Großes Gewächs to go with our usual weeknight pork chop.

I gave this a 30 min decant just to get it going, but it reall didn’t need it. The nose was explosive from the start, with tons of lime and apricot and smoke. The acid dominated a little a first, but it calemd down to reveal an exceptionally balanced wine, with a surprising amount of richness. Stone fruits and buttery croissant came to the front, then scooched aside to make room for some tangerine and herbal notes. Not fruit driven, but with plenty of fruit to give the palate density and cushion the acid. I really liked this wine. There is a ton of “generic good quality tasty” riesling out there, and even from some top producers it can get a little lost in the this-is-good-riesling-but-I-won’t-remember-it-tomorrow category. This stood out at the moment, and now as I write about it. It did start to fade a little at the end - Jonathan said it pixilated and I said it blurred, which seem like two completely opposite descriptions for the same phenomenon - so I plan to drink my other bottles over the next 2-3 years and not decant. Lovel wine, and I think Florian has dialed it in even more starting around 2019.
