Always sucks, but sounds like you rebounded. (And of course had enough available stocks to do so…)
I could have grabbed another Vollenweider, but the Strub was cold!
2022 Grünhaus Abtsberg GG
This was very delicious and friendly. Yes, some crisp coiled reduction and the linear mineral focused poise and precision of Abtsberg. But also a nice light-framed juicy body to the fruit that is still succulent enough to keep drinking and enjoying with your food. I suppose '22 is plenty ripe, although I have had some awkward '22s recently. This was not that.
This, combined with a recent 2023 Herrenberg GG that was even friendlier, makes me excited about the new era of Grünhaus GGs because the character is still there. And will see how they age.
Just opened a 2021 Tatomer Kick On Ranch Santa Barbara CountyRiesling. - won this at the Falltacular Silent Auction.
Delicious.
New winery for me.
2022 Weingut Hermann Ludes Thörnicher Ritsch Riesling Kabinett feinherb Gackes Unten - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (2/2/2026)
– cracked and poured –
– tasted non-blind on Days 1 and 3 –
– TN from Day 3 –
Nose gives a “zesty” impression, with a limey gooseberry aroma dominating. Quite lovely here on Day 3: high acidity; despite the Feinherb reality, this comes across as very dry – so much so it almost has a touch of a tannic quality to it; lime, lychee, and gooseberry for the fruits; 9.5% abv. is not noticeable; paired wonderfully with whole grilled Sea Bream. I continue to love this wine. Drink or Hold.
This along with the '22 Oben, are my two favorite feinherb. Just keep waffling which I like better.
Sounds like me with Grunhaus’s Kabinetts. In the end, I go with whichever is cheaper and/or in front of me at the moment! ![]()
An all Riesling lunch just over a week ago. Prum auslese 1990, Muller spatlese and Donnhoff spatlese were an unusual flight to begin a meal with, but delicious and a really strong start. 2008 Donnhoff GG outshone the 2013 considerably. Two halves of eiswein to finish were magnificent.
How was that SF chard? Been wanting to taste it. Also not really available in the US ![]()
Sadly flawed. Blue cheese, sweaty socks. Not what it was supposed to be at all which was a shame.
This thread is getting quiet.
Tomorrow is not only Friday the 13th, but it’s also International Riesling Day! Break out a good bottle folks. ![]()
Getting married later today and this is what I got for me and my fiancée to enjoy at dinner. Just added my hand for scale. Never held a Riesling mag before and it’s making me laugh how big it is lol
2021 Schafer Frolich Monzinger Frühlingsplätzchen GG
Will report back with tasting notes/thoughts.
Last night, I had a 2001 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Auslese* that was spectacular. Golden hue, rich but not too rich, perfectly sweet, but at that delightful point where it’s drying just a tad. Perfectly balanced with acid. Oddly, it had a slight note of thyme on the nose and some marjoram/oregano in the mouth, but I found that attractive.
This is just what you hope for in a 24+ year-old Middle Mosel Auslese.
I opened a 24’ Donnhoff Kreuznacher Kahlenberg trocken last night, think this needs more time and left half the bottle in the fridge. Will see how this opens up tonight.
Congratulations Zach!
Congrats!
So I heard it is International Riesling Day!
- 2018 Weiser-Künstler Ellergrub Riesling Reserve - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (3/13/2026)
Decanted about 30 min and consumed over a few hours across a range of temperatures. Golden color, none of the green tinge that the paler Clemens Busch served alongside. Looked on the mature side, but not the least bit oxidzed. Exotic nose, with an element of matcha powder and something I couldn't quite put my finger on for the first hour or so, then settled on (this will sound odd) cucumber raita! Carraway seed, too. Some exotic fruits thrown in as well for what could have passed as the closer to an Indian banquet. Slightly viscous mouthfeel made it seem richerthan it was, while remaining fully dry. Really enjoyed this wine, after struggling with some other 2018 WKs that we are still not sure will ever come around. Well, this one is drinking beautifully and has many years ahead. It showed none of the tartness described in the MFW review, though it did not lack in acidity. - 2019 Weingut Clemens Busch Marienburg Fahrlay Riesling Großes Gewächs - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (3/13/2026)
First bottle of a case quietly sitting in the cellar. Decanted 30 min or so and consumed over a couple of hours, first with a pork chop and then on its own. Texturally a very compelling wine, very bright and slightly spiky on the tongue which worked well with the food. To the nose, tangerine skin dominated followed by floral notes and some savory herbs. Touch of spicy ginger on the palate as well. Balanced and complex without being particularly powerful, this struggled next to the WK Ellergrub we also had going, which was much more developed and bombastic. As usual, Clemens Busch has a lot of character, not easily categorized or compared. This one performed better on its own, a touch colder than we first served it, and continued to open with air. Very much enjoyed it and look forward to future bottles over many years.

I had the 22 Chard recently and thought it was very good. It has some riesling characteristics. I put it in the unique category of German chards that are a hypothetical blend of Riesling and Chardonnay. I like it very much.
WHOA! Congrats on getting married. I think you are off to a good start opening a riesling.
Sarah, is the rubber band on the decanter and bottle to keep track of which is which? What a useful system. I usually rely on memory and, all too often, deductive tasting.
