„The Ellergrub has a higher proportion of blue slate than my other vineyards. Also, the slate is finely weathered, with lots of little pieces of stone. This makes for very subtle and elegant wines which can be very mineral and not fruit-driven at first and generally need time.” Gernot Kollmann
2015 Immich-Batterieberg „Enkircher Ellergrub“ Riesling
From 80±year-old ungrafted vines, what a soft-spoken Riesling with huge refinement, playful elegance, silky texture and finesse. Flavors of white peach and with a smoky&spicy minerality. What a refined&elegant character this Riesling has and now is the time to open a bottle. ![]()
„The estate Immich-Batterieberg is one of those great classic Estates whose wines have been revered by Riesling lovers for decades. Whoever had the chance of tasting a majestic 1949er or 1953er Enkircher Batterieberg will be bowled over by rarely seen finesse, freshness, complexity and elegance.
Yet this Estate was almost done over at the end of the 2000s. In 1989, the Immich family, which had owned the Estate since the early 19th century, sold it to a new owner who introduced a more “industrial” age. The solid but essentially dispensable wines produced during this period almost ruined a century-old reputation. It ended abruptly in 2008, when the owner was declared bankrupt.
This could have been the end of the estate Immich-Batteriebergand its coveted vineyards was it not for two wine loving investors and Gernot Kollmann. They took over the Estate in 2009 and returned to proven methods from the past: Ambient yeasts, cask fermentation, long contacts with the lees to give the wines the time to develop (as the traditional Fuder were all broken, Gernot switched to used barrique, a decision he is very happy with).“ Mosel Fine Wines
Drank some Julian Haart last night. @Rodrigo_B and Albert Kolesnikov put together an incredible three day tasting of Julian Haart. Friday was Goldtropchen, last night was Ohligsberg and today a Schubertslay Brunch. Julian flew over for the event. What an outstanding once in a lifetime opportunity to do such an indepth study of Julian’s wines.
Had a 2022 Boxler Riesling over the weekend (not cru). It had great balance, minerality, drank quite clean. A very good Riesling in a market replete with good Rieslings.
This looks like a lot of a very good thing. Do you have notes about vintage differences that you would share? Is the Ohligsberg essentially a continuation of the Wintricher label or was there a change in vines harvested after 2013?
Everything poured was from Ohligsberg. The 2010 Julian’s first vintage showed really well. I loved the 13s as I love the vintage. Julian nailed 2014 and most likely made the best wine of the vintage. I loved 15, 17 were showing great and I really, really love 2021. It was an overall great showing and fascinating to do such an in depth study. Today we do Schubertslay!
This 2020 Wittmann Riesling trocken was drinking really well, texturally it caressed the tongue. I bought this bottle as a “study” to assess the winery based on what the most humble bottling. Cannot recall see any/many notes about the winery and it’s wines around here.
How do you do that today AND Beddia? Even soilpimp can’t be in two places at once!
Enroute to Philly now!
Lol! Now that is Riesling dedication.
Opened 2016 the other day. Great stuff. Thanks for note on 2015.
From BD 17, 2023 Ser sparkling Riesling. Previously I have only enjoyed 2 California Rieslings, a late 1990’s? Stony Hill and a 1985 Renaissance Late Harvest. Well, let’s make that a trio now!
From 60 year old vines and bone dry this is a terrific and unique wine. A strong mousse and complex nose with a fuller body and a long acidic after texture. Ginger, lemon, lime with persistence. My guess is used barrel fermented w/o ML. Glad to have 2 more and suspect a little bit of ageing with smoothen things even further.
How would you say the 2025 Ohligsberg Kabinett/Trocken would rank?
I found a Westhofener 1G '21 in a shop here a few weeks ago. Rather enjoyable for the price although not hitting the same hight as some of the other names. Should be some 25€? I saw Martin Zwick also left a favorable review here on the site.
Are you sure you mean 2025? I am not sure if Julian is going to make a 2025 Kabinett Trocken. I did taste his 25s when I was in the Mosel in December and they are simply extraordinary. He and a few other growers compared it to 2015, a vintage I love.
He did make a 2024 Kabinett Trocken. Minuscule amounts came to the U.S. and I have only tried it once. I also really like 2024 is this was a beautiful wine.
I meant Kabinett and/or Trocken, not specifically Kabinett Trocken. But whatever, his wines are always good (if not great!)!
If your question is how does 2025 rank in comparison to the other vintages. It is still early but it could be his best.
That’s a good price. It’s more like 30euros retail in Berlin.
Although technically it’s an Erste Lage, not a GG. (It’s a selection of the vineyards across Westhofen)
Right you are Rahsaan. Will correct it.
And yes, just checked and saw there are some offers around the 25€ out there. Won’t buy some for cellaring but would be happy to order off a list should I see it. Fine quality.
