Acid queen
One of Melheimer’s specialities is Sekt, or sparkling wine, made in a traditional style. Most Mosel producers bring their grapes or base wines to a sparkling-wine specialist, whereas Melsheimer makes an in-house Sekt.
Interesting views and certainly it comes down to personal preference. I really love the Mullen wines especially the older 90s era wines that Lyle was selling for many years.
I love this wine so much! A bunch of it hit restaurants in LA and SF and it was generally on wine lists for ~$65. I think I have had 25-30 bottles of it! It is a perfect food wine. Love the 96 point rating, I don’t disagree!
Speaking of traditional 2022 Mosel Riesling Sekt brut, I recently had two bottles from Julian Scheid in Merl that were outstanding and had only 10.5 percent alcohol.
Nice. The Melsheimer was labeled at 11%, and seemed like it. Very reasonable!
- 2001 Fritz Haag Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese #7 - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (1/4/2026)
Definitely good, definitely still sweet, though maybe the richness amplifies that. Good depth, good balance, solid acidity so it doesn't come off as flabby. Peaches lead, followed by stone and tropical fruits. Definitely botrytis present. (94 points)
As you know, it’s hard to be that low with the second fermentation in bottle.
I remember someone on a forum (was it this one?) with the tag line: It takes 3 noses to smell a Barolo. Well, I invited some friends over to drink wines in the light of “Exercises in Style” by Raymond Queneau. The message of a vineyard can be told in many different bottlings, and the message in this book is told in 99 ways.
In 2016 Markus Molitor had (at least) 9 different wines from Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, and I had gotten my hands on 3 of them. Different Prädikats and different styles (white cap, green cap and gold cap).
Markus Molitor Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese (white) 2016
Vibrating acidity on the palate and a nicely developed wine in a dry style. Still showing the richness of the grapes. Pure and good value.
Markus Molitor Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese*** Feinherb (green) 2016
Candied apples and feels airy and light on the nose. A bit simple, but coming more together with some hours of air. The feinherb RS feels developed and integrated, and the wine feels almost dry. Lacking some concentration
Markus Molitor Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett (gold) 2016
Soft fruit and developed wine. I think this had more edge in its youth. Not tired, but the lack of concentration and acidic punch makes for a more dull wine.
Pretty much in agreement with Robert here on the older wines. Especially 2010. I have seen some poor reviews of the 2010s but I personally really like them. Past 2010 my reactions have not been as effusive.
Have little experience with Mullen but bought some following Robert’s recommendation, have only opened a few 2021s - I really liked them.
I took another sip of the Mullen I opened the other day, and that “off” note reminded me of a Sweet-Tart, which is not something that normally bothers me. What was wrong is that it was dirty Sweet-Tart, as in actually covered in dirt. Blech!
Do you get that for both the dry and sweet wines? Only had the dry wines myself, didn’t find anything like that in my limited sample.
My sample size with Mullen is limited, but the questionable flavor has been in all the wines I have tried, both feinherb and fully sweet. I have never had a Mullen Trocken, and no interest in trying one.
If I got the dirty Sweet-Tart notes, I’d likely feel the same. Out of curiosity I’ll buy a bottle with sweetness next time (only bought trocken).
After having this wonderful wine a few weeks ago, I decided to open as one of our NYE wines a 2007 Abtsberg Kabinett. Another fabulous wine. Over time, I just like Grenhaus (and Ruwer and Saar wines more generally) more and more.
But getting back to the Mosel, I had a wonderful 2001 Reinhold Haart Wintricher Ohligsberg Auslese. I have had this wine several times and this was the best it has tasted. Very rich and honeyed with good bracing acidity.
Good call on the Haart. We had a 2012 R. Haart Wintricher Ohligsberg Spätlese over the holidays that was just fabulous.
Okay. I’m going to do a Martin Mullen event this year in NYC. We can put all this to rest!
They’re doing a library tasting on March 7th at the winery….
I mean, that would be quite the offline…
