Thanks, everyone - as I think I mentioned, my friend was asking me to get suggestions she could pass on to a colleague who wants to send wine to a lawyer in Paris. So no browsing by my friend (who is fluent in French and spends lots of time in Paris herself).
All well and good but does anyone speak English there?
Only English English.
Dernier is great. Bought way too many btls just last few days.
this place used to be loaded with gems (02 dauvissat foret for <50 euro is a standout) but my last couple visits a few years back were definitely disappointing. at one point they also had some of the cheapest selosse in town, ~90 euro for initial. not sure what it is like these days, but in general the prices in paris have been on the rise for quite some time. usually the best discoveries are outside of the main tourist areas and have no web presence…
And shipping to USA?
They do provide shipping service. I myself am not. Lugging them back while drinking some along the trip.
Lavinia was closed during our September 2021 visit. If it reopens, it’s worth a visit. It’s located between Opera and Madeleine.
No, the Madeleine Lavinia store won’t reopen. There should be a smaller store in another parisian location at some point I believe.
I’ll add to the list Cave Barberon in the 5ième arrondissement., nice selection, friendly owner.
No, the Madeleine Lavinia store won’t reopen.
Forever?
Lavinia announced it was permanently closed. Not profitable apparently.
Bumping this as I’m heading to Paris in 2 weeks. Thanks for the recommendations everyone.
Q for buying online: prices at various places are listed as both including VAT and excluding VAT (I’m looking at https://www.millesimes.com in particular); I’m assuming that if I buy wine and have it shipped to my hotel, I have to pay the price including VAT and still go through the refund process at the airport?
Thanks for the advice. This will be my first time dealing with VAT refunds…
Generally yes. LDG is very helpful with the process but you still have to do some work unless you’re having them ship back home.
LDG packed up my wine nicely for the plane ride. They use a different VAT refund company that actually gives more $$ back than global blue/planet. Unless you’re buying many cases it should get auto-approved on the Pablo machine at the airport. Took two months until I got the money back.
What is LDG?
I believe it’s La Dernière Goutte.
About a year ago, I found a few interesting wines there, which I brought back to the US. But when I went back last October, they were basically cleared out of any allocated stuff. So it may no longer be the same…
Nothing allocated but some back vintage burgs and some champagne that doesn’t come to the US (for now)
I never got my vat refund the terminals didn’t work and the lines for a teller were hundreds deep. I may have done something wrong, not a plot of money though.

I believe it’s La Dernière Goutte.

This for sure. No more Allemand, Gonon, Dauvissat etc on the shelves. Bought Jamet and Bize last year at what I felt were decent prices.
