Nose of candied raspberries, ripe strawberries, cinnamon, clove, honey, a touch of pine needles, and a touch of lemon. Medium high crunchy acidity with a ton of energy. Palate of tart raspberries supported by red fruits, light spices, and hints of citrus. Assertive tannins that are firm - yet they really feel like they want to be softer. Lengthy multi-stage finish that starts off with red fruits then the acidity kicks in bringing a wave of light minerals. It then starts to linger with a darker minerals, dark fruit skins, a touch bitter herbs, a hint of peppercorn, and a bit of violet. At the very end of the finish - earl gray tea.
Cheerful, bright, happy, and fun - which is what I expect when I pop open a bottle from EWCY.
Similar to another producers '22 CC County Carignane, the tannins here really have that feeling to them that they want to become velvety and plush. I feel like this needs time away in the cellar to evolve to that state and then it will be singing. (93 points)
I always want to try to weed out some of the wines I might like less so I can get more of the wines I might like more, but always find that to be an impossible challenge. In for the mixed case of 2x all six wines. yeah!
This. My one real reservation about the direction of WineCo is the deemphasis of Mourvèdre. That was the grape that made me fall in love with Hardyâs winemaking, and now itâs a bit player rather than the focus. I donât like that at all. Hate saying it, but itâs true.
I mean, he still does the Evangelho cuvee every year, plus last year there was a Shake Ridge version, plus heâs done a few other pure Mourvedres with EDWCY. I guess itâs not the main focus as with D&R, but he still makes several different iterations.
Hi David- Mourvèdre is still near and dear to our heart. By tonnage it is still the top red we ferment. We have far less individual Mourvèdre cuvĂŠes than D&R. I donât think that will radically change any time soon as our production size is about 1/3 of what we produced at D&R. (We hope to have one new site this year.)
Yes. This is the first club shipment of the last 4 that didnât have a Mourvèdre. Unfortunately '23 Mourvèdre Yeah! wasnât ready, yet. Either that or Shake will be in the next one.
One last note-
If you have loved our Evangelho Mourvèdre bottlings - you will really want to check out the Evangelho Carignane in this release. It is . Consider it the non-Mourvèdre Mourvèdre
2023 Extradimensional Wine Co. Yeah! Primitivo Innervisions II - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley (1/17/2025)
Be forewarned, this wine is painfully young. When I first opened it there was an intense grapiness. I took a small pour, and then corked it up for the night. That was 24 hours ago, and tonight we have liftoff. Itâs still a young, intense wine, but now itâs wine and not hypercharged grape juice. Thereâs structure, delicate lines of complexity poking their way through the rich fabric, and a purple flower top note thatâs the distilled essence of the heart-shaped herb. Take a sip and visit the ancestors on a separate plane of existence. Seriously though - give this one some time. Itâs still expanding from its big bang.
Another head turner of a wine from Hardy. Bountiful riot of flowers, macerated berries and a touch of salt marsh in the nose. Dark fruited palate, blackcurrant pastille, plum and blackberry, but fans into savory, chalk-laden red fruit pits, like a high quality Cru Beaujolais. But then thereâs a sort of tidal funk, almost gamy, with five spice and clove, maybe a drop of anisette. Iâd swear there was Mourvedre but there itâs mostly primitivo in the blend. So many layers in its medium-lightweight body; more tannic and structured than some of the other EDWC wines. Decanted 4 hours and got better as the night progressed.
Speaking of Mourvèdre, popped a D&R 19 Enz last night - âPop n pour, despite my warning to myself almost exactly two years ago⌠truly gorgeous cherry nose, hints of rose, and a sandalwood/earthy hiking note, a touch of something herbal green. Velvety entry, but with a tannic grip on the finish (which will probably smooth out with air). Deep but not heavy. Quite lovely.â It did indeed smooth out with air, and will report back on Night 2âŚ
Are any of the Mourvèdre cuvees poured in the tasting room? We have an appt lined up in early Feb and I was hoping to try your Mourvèdre. Your comment on the Carignane is intriguing as well- I have enjoyed a few of those, Ridgeâs Buchignani Ranch, in particular.
