What wines will you be opening for Christmas Dinner?

I’m looking at doing a magnum or two but can’t decide which direction I want to go. Dinner will be some sort of beef dish, so I am thinking some Brunello or Barolo. Also, where have you guys had the best luck buying older vintage bottles? I always like to open those on holidays. Everyone seems to get excited over them.

I will be starting off with Cedric Bouchard Urseles '13 that has nice delicate bubbles, into PYCM Corton-Charlemagne '14 which will be big, and finish off with Beaucastel '89. If everyone is alive by then, I’ll probably open the Moulin Touchais '68.

I just hope the Beaucastel is not corked… If it is, I’m thinking Clape Cornas '13 or Rougeard Les Clos '14.

Egly Ouriet Brut Grand Cru, then 2008 Dom Rose. My dad will probably open a red wine.

'20 Salty Goats Oakville Cab Sauv.

Menu has not been finalized, but these are a few I’m eager to open and try.

My family celebrates Christmas and I have my Christmas Eve lineup planned ahead. We don’t have a lot of wine aficionados, but we do have a number of people who enjoy good wine. I also don’t have the bank account to bring any Petrus, La Tache, etc. I am keeping it fairly simple and straightforward and hopefully bringing something everyone will like. Here is the lineup I will be bringing (I am hosting):

2016 Groth Cabernet Sauvignon
2019 Aubert Pinot Noir UV-SL
2019 Aubert Chardonnay CIX
2005 Joh Jos Prum WS Spatlese
2005 Joh Jos Prum WS Auslese

Most of us are Pinot and Riesling drinkers, but my aunt and uncle are big Groth fans so I will bring a botte of that as well. It’s not my favorite, but tis the season for giving. Others will be brining wine and most will probably bring a Cabernet so I thought I would go with less Cab.

Edit- I should also say most of the guests drink almost 100% US based wines so I try to keep it basic for them

For Christmas day evening I haven’t thought about it much but I assume we will crack another Aubert Pinot and JJ Prum bottle. I love to see what others are planning. There are several others who have shared in a topic called “holiday lineup” for Christmas Eve from a couple of days ago as well if you want to see those.

It is always exciting to bring an older bottle. For people that don’t drink wine often they always love it and they also get to have a new wine experience. With luck we may create some new Berserkers

It may be just my wife and me this year, with me being the only one drinking wine, so very limited. But probably two or three from this list:

2005 Schramsberg J Schram
2010 Billecart Salmon Rose
2012 Bolly LGA
2015 Pierre Peters Chetillons
2015 Bouchard Corton Charlemagne
2002 Diamond Creek Volcanic Hill
2013 Viader
2017 Bella Oaks
2005 Suduiraut

With that list you can throw darts and you will be happy.

I’m unreasonably excited for Christmas dinner. It’s just my partner and me. Since it’s my first year collecting wine, I’ve found Winebid to be really reliable for getting older bottles.

I’ll be making roast goose for the first time, with local beef bourguignon pot pie to enjoy that week as well. So some bottles from the following list:

2011 Le Brun Servenay BdB
2009 Beaufort Polisy BdN

1999 Kalin Cellars Pinot Noir
2009 Louis Jadot Clos de Ursules

2003 The Standish Shiraz

2021 Extradimensional Wine Co Mariana’s Cabernet Sauvignon (already coravin’d this and it was delicious)
2016 or 2017 Roy Piper

2014 Suduiraut

2009 Haut Batailley and 2009 Potensac are standing up at my BIL’S, not sure what they are planning for food, but they should be a good starting point.

I had the '17 Bella Oaks earlier in the year, and it was stunning! This producer is definitely one of my favorites from Napa. You also cannot go wrong with the '02 DC Volcanic Hill.

Thinking Roederer or Vazart-Coquart and a TBD Puffeney red on Christmas Day at home. Also feeling N. Rhone and Loire CF this holiday season with extended family.

For our Danish Christmas dinner you need either something with a bit of fruit punch and alcohol or sweet white with a bit of age on it (Spätlese probably the most popular choice).

I will open a Chateau des Tours, CDR, 2016 and a Huet, Clos du Bourg, Demi-Sec, 2014.

Maybe a Champagne while cooking dinner.

Dinner will be my mom’s lobster crumble, so we’ll be having Champagne and Ramey Chardonnay.

Christmas at the in-laws this year in Bretagne. My father-in-law has been battling health issues so he’ll probably ask me to go downstairs and pick the wines. I will come back with whatever looks good, can be retrieved from his 3000+ bottle tetris pile of wine within an acceptable timeframe and without breaking too many bottles. If memory serves me right, I cleared a path to some Chambolle and NSG last time I was there…

Wow, I never knew this existed. This checks all of the boxes for me!

Have the 2 Ravenswood merlot mags that will get opened during the course of the week. I may grab a Neal magnum if I have one at my offsite.

Will probably open a Spottswoode 14’ to see where that is at. Need to get into my locker to bring some things home.

Will also need a nice white since we typically do king crab legs for Xmas eve.
