What wine will you pour for Rosh Hashanah 5770?

Daniel, I am teaching a class at University of California-Irvine called “Red, White and Green: Organic
Biodynamic and Sustainable Wines” I have been looking for the kosher cuvee of Pontet Canet (or any other of the Bdx you mentioned), but can’t find any. Would there be an OU or something on the label? If so, what?

However, I need an organic, sustainable or BioD wine like Pontet Canet. From their website: “The château’s winegrowing philosophy is to intervene as little as possible and as naturally as possible in the vineyard. Only traditional viticultural and cultivation practices are used. Chemical weed killers are banned in keeping with environmental protection, and priority is given to the vine’s long-term health.”

Can you advise? Thank you!

Hi Daniel!

Thank you for the information. The Kosher wines I am familiar with are all kept to a small Kosher section in our Wine Department, where we have brands like: (Covenant, Hafagen, Galil, Kedem, Herzog and some others). Our French selections for Kosher are in the French section, unmarked. So thanks for the 411, very useful. The next time you are in OC, please stop by for a drink! [cheers.gif]

Best regards,
Veronica

Marlene, Hi…

The importer of the kosher edition of Pontet-Canet is Royal Wines (Kedem) in New Jersey. Best contact there is Jay Buchsbaum at jbuchsbaum@kedem.com Jay will either be able to tell you where to find it or perhaps even to send you a bottle or two for class purposes. (Don’t hesitate to say that I gave you his email)

As to the label, identical to the regular label except for the small kashrut symbol on the front a K in a circle and more detailed kashrut information on the rear label. Truth is there are now so many rabbinical “authorities” granting kashrut certificates that I frankly gave up on trying to keep track of those. Those who follow one rabbi or another know enough to check the rear labels.

By the way, for those who do not abide by kashrut, it is invariably interesting to taste the kosher and non-kosher editions of French wine blind at the same tasting.

If you need more information on the kosher editions, don’t hesitate to ask.

Best
Rogov

It’s too easy to say “something sweet” but that’s where I’m headed.

I’ll let my cousin provide the dinner wines, I’ll provide the sweet for dessert (and maybe I’ll dip apples into it). The 75 Suduiraut is on my list as most people are wine novices and will appreciate the novelty of drinking a 30 year old wine.

Daniel, thank you so much!

Yarden’s Ortal Merlot is pretty good, but I like the Ortal Syrah much better. As far as Castel goes, I think the 2006 is one of the more approachable vintages in recent years. I’ve had 2002-2006 and I think that it’s definitely low on the tannin scale.

thanks… will try the Ortal Syrah as well…
