What wine will you pour for Rosh Hashanah 5770?

And we already have a minyan!

We should have a tallit and tefillin off-line one morning (wish I had an appropriate emoticon).

Getting some great ideas for wine from the thread – thanks.

Since I don’t keep kosher, and don’t understand the need for the kosher laws in this modern day (and if there is a god, would it really want to deprive me of the pleasure of pork?), I don’t feel any need to drink kosher wines one or ten days of the year. I’ll open a good bottle of wine to celebrate the new year: probably an older CdP this year.

Since my SO, Stacey and her family are holiday observant, I have become the Kosha Wine Hunta, for these occasions.

We’ve had great luck avoiding the usual dreck, and making discoveries like Tishby, and Hai, (I really like wines from the Golan Heights ) and lately even some KfP Ribera del Jucar wines like Elvi Ness and Vina Encina.

Disclaimer: I do sell these wines. (of course, you think I’m meshuga enough to pay retail?!)

We should rename the board WineMeshugenahs

In any event, I’m going to open an 04 Golan Heights Ortal Vineyard Merlot… whoever in the thread is tasting before, please post your notes…

We were at a reception last night and drank a Recantini Sauvignon that was pretty good… I’ve also always enjoyed the Dalton sauvignon-semillon blend…

I will follow my Jewish family’s long established tradition and drink whatever pairs best with Chinese takeout [wink.gif]

Neal, my sympathies.

Henry, Hi…

Following is my most recent tasting note for the wine in question. Certainly among the best of Israel!

Golan Heights Winery, Merlot, Ortal Vineyard, Yarden, 2004: Showing splendidly! Dark garnet toward inky black, full-bodied, with once firm tannins and generous spicy wood integrating nicely now. Opens to reveal a tempting array of blackberry, raspberry, plum and cassis fruits, those supported nicely by hints of smoky cedarwood and chocolate, all leading to a gently spicy and notably long finish. Simultaneously complex, concentrated and elegant. Drink now–2018. Score 93. K

(Daniel) Rogov,

How do you think the 2005 Margalit Enigma would be drinking now? Or the 1999 Domaine du Castel Grand Vin?

Eric, Hi….

Before the tasting notes a necessary comment. The two Israeli wineries whose wines are showing fine cellaring capabilities are the Golan Heights Winery (their Katzrin and Yarden Series) and the wines of Margalit. Castel makes some fine wines, of that there can be no question, but many of those wines are not showing the cellaring potential that one might have hoped for.

Following are my mot recent tasting notes (both within six months) for the two wines in question.

Margalit, Enigma, 2005: This medium- to full-bodied blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot (60%, 22% and 18% respectively) shows generous cassis, raspberry and cherry fruits, those matched nicely by caressingly soft tannins, lightly spicy oak and chocolate, all coming together elegantly on a long and mouth-filling finish. Drink now–2013. Score 93.

Grand Vin Castel, 1999: This full-bodied, deep ruby-toward-dark purple wine continues to show good balance between generous, well-integrated tannins and currant, plum and blackberry fruits. Not aging as gracefully as once predicted and now showing a bit flabby on the palate. Past its peak and maturing rapidly. Drink up. Score 87.

Daniel, thanks so much! Sounds like it is time to pop the Castel and no hurry on that Engima (which sounds fantastic from your note)!

You have your holidays confused. That’s for Christmas Day.

Thanks for the note, Daniel. a year of health, peace and happiness…

May you all have a sweet Rosh Hashonah.
I will be pouring Domaine du Castel, Castel Grand Vin 2005

Hopped on over to my local source — Rosenberg’s Judaica. They do have a vast selection of Israeli and Kosher wines.
They did have many of the recommended wines above including the pricey French. They had some CNdP koshers - but I thought having some “New Castle of the Pope” kosher wine was sort of like belonging to the Corpus Christi Jewish Community Center (which does exist).

Picked up:
Bustan 2002 Merlot
Domaine du Castel Blanc du Castel 2006
Shiloh Chardonnay 2007
Carmel Sha’al Gewurztraminer Late Harvest 2006

Notes after our dinner.

L’shanah tovah tikatev v’taihatem to all.

Thanks Melissa. As they say, no one gets out alive

Neal Mollen wrote:This will be a very somber Rosh Hashanah, as it will be my first without my mother who passed away in February. We will open something special in her honor and hope to get through the day without major trauma. Supposed to be a happy occasion, but that will hard to pull off this year._______________________________________________________________________________________

Neal, my condolences to you. I will drink a glass to celebrate your mother’s life!

2003 Covenant. Lucky enough to have received as a gift and it should be ready to drink.

Pontet-Canet is Kosher.

Veronica, Hi…

It would be more accurate to say that Pontet-Canet, like many other Bordeaux chateaux, makes a kosher edition in addition to their regular release. Among others that follow this pattern - Chateaux Malartic Lagraviere, Rauzan-Gassies, Rollan de By, Smith-Haute-Lafitte, La Tour Seran, de Valandraud, Quinault, La Tonnelle, La Tour Seran, Le Crock, Leoville Poyferre.
