Ok have I got a special wine and new discovery to kick off my first tasting note in this thread!
This intersects on three themes that I have been talking about lately:
1.) New Producers in Burgundy. I am really excited about all of the new producers in Burgundy. Most have worked at top domains, many are new to Burgundy, many have at least one if not two feet in the natural camp and are typically making wines from the less heralded areas of burgundy.
2.) Simple Wines. I am enjoying the simple wines and new discoveries so much more these days.
3.) Natural Wines. I am guessing most would not think this was a “natural” wine if they did not know. Once again I sat in a packed restaurant in NYC and looked around at a very stylish young crowd where every single table had wine on it, even in dry January.
On to the wine:
2022 Raphaelle Guyot - Irancy Le Baiser
Let me tell you how great this wine is, my wife and I frequently order two bottles or when we run into friends or make friends order more than two but we never, never order two of the same bottle. This wine was so extraordinary we ordered two of the same wine! We did share half of the second bottle with our neighbors : )
This wine was absolutely stunning. Translucent red. Beautiful aromatics. The clarity and fidelity of the bright, pure, seductive Pinot flavors was just awe inspiring. Renee and I just kept looking at each other and saying is this real! Renee said it has to be a fruit night. We looked it up and it was flower night. The wine is cerebral, emotional and simply life-affirming on every level. There was not a hint of wood or manipulation it was just true to itself! This is everything I want in wine these days! The second bottle did not quite have the fireworks of the first, was it us or the bottle? I did buy 6 bottles this morning before posting this note
Side note: I learned about Raphaëlle Guyot in Austin Texas. I was there on a business trip and went into Richard Hargreaves (formerly of Majordomo) restaurant Underdog and was greeted by none other than MS Michael Engelmann and former Wine Director of The Modern, I last saw him working in Paris so was shocked to see him in Austin, I asked for a recommendation and this is the producer he recommended! There is a big natural wine scene in Austin.
