Yes
I imagine he was asking for a summary of the differences between them
If you were savvy enough to order The Chris James on BD16, get ready for a treat with the 2022 Tsai BdN Bubbles!
Unlike last years BdB release, which came with a warning NOT to open!, I got the green light from Marcus that this is already in a nice place despite being disgorged 12/2024. As he predicted, the first pour came with an explosive tantrum of mousse. When it calmed down, what was left was mostly flat super tasty Pinot Noir. This was only an issue for the first two ounce pour. After that, the wine held the bubble just fine. This started off pretty tart (yay!) as an extra brut and had none of the reductive character of the BdBs. Not surprisingly, it continued to develop and improve with air.
I have had the opportunity to taste this several times over the last year pre-disgorgement and was really looking forward to its release. Having also tasted a number of other GF BdN currently sleeping in the nursery, I have found that these have tremendous aromatics. I am a BdB guy for Champagne, but I am finding the Goodfellow BdN may steal my heart.

I had this a few days ago.
It has shown wonderful development since release.
Opened 19 Whistling Ridge a couple nights ago and it’s pretty shut down. Oracle was a bit more giving IMO. Both need some years.
Agreed on the 19 Whistling Ridge. 2019s seem to be following the 2018s in the timing on the dumb phase.
Things that have been good lately(either from us tasting or mail from someone who has checked in):
2010s and earlier ganerally show well. If it feels tight decant it. 2006 bleah…hot vintage and hard for me to like. Some wines are tiring.
2011 Durant
2012 Pinot Noirs across the board, though no rush on anything.
2013 Durant
2013 Whistling Ridge (decant IMO)
2014 Whistling Ridge
2014 Bishop Creek
2015 Bishop Creek shows it’s Y-C nature in the darker and more generous profile.
2015 Whistling Ridge
2015 Heritage No. 4 (decant IMO)
2017 Block 11, Fir Crest
2017 Durant
2017 Whistling Ridge
No rush on anything (except the 06s)
What can we expect with the 2023 Berserker Cuvee Pinot? Will it be accessible out of the blocks, or will it need (or be much better with) time? The last time I checked in on the 2017 Berserker Cuvee it was drinking well, but seemed like it still had some development ahead of it. I imagine the two are different blends from different sources though, so maybe apples to oranges.
Yes and yes.
Add 2015 Heritage 6. We opened one last night. 4 hour decant. Stunning. Last glass was at 6 hours after cork was pulled and it was the best of the bottle.
The 2023 Berserker Pinot Noir will ship in April, but that’s right after bottling to catch the shipping window.
That said, 2023 is a great vintage and the wine will over perform at the price but like all Goodfellow wines will really love 7-10 in the cellar (5 if you just can’t wait any longer).
5 it is then ![]()
7 to 10 months? Years?
Probably years.
Definitely years.
2023 is a pretty delicious vintage, and there should be an early window for exploring the wine, but our wines are definitely about what they evolve into.
The 2013 Whistling Ridge still has some tannins, but the aromatics have really evolves the past 2 years into a wine much more akin to old world Pinot Noirs than New World and the layering is lovely. Especially for a vintage that dropped 6.5” of rain on the vineyard right as fruit reached ripeness…
@Marcus_Goodfellow, if you were to open one of '17 Whistling Ridge Chardonnay, '18 Whistling Ridge Chardonnay, and '19 Richard’s Cuvee, which would you go for? I think I’ve seen you say '17s are drinking well and '18s are closed down, but that may have been in re: the PNs rather than the chards.
I would definitely open the 2017 Chardonnay.
Last summer the 2019 vineyard designates were all in a great place. We didn’t open the Richard’s though. But the 2017s have been excellent lately though still youthful.
Has anyone opened a 15 Whistling Ridge PN recently?
I had the 2019 Durant PN this past weekend, and I definitely think it can be opened at this point. Decanted for an hour then consumed over 2 days. I picked this bottle as I thought 19s may have an earlier drinking window and I think a Durant tend to be open earlier as well. If you are looking to try a more recent vintage PN, this seems to be accessible and quite nice right now.
Thanks, John! My very first bottles of 2019 Goodfellow Pinot Noir (3 of the Fir Crest and 3 of the Heritage Blend No. 16, Lewman Vineyard) just arrived last week (from GrandVin). While, obviously, different wines, every data point on 2019 is helpful to me!! ![]()
