I like the edges .
Also not too happy about Dujac and Mugneret-Gibourg. Too oaky in their current state for me (will probably enjoy them with more age).
All he recent talk about Falkenstein prompted me to open this 2015 feinherb. It’s drinking great, still all primary fruit, but the acid is integrated beautifully. Nice balance of the sugar and tartness. I think the feinherb wines here are in my wheelhouse, and while I’m very much a lover of high acid wines, I prefer this style to the kabinett trocken at this point.
Maybe our Mugneret-Gibourg experts will bother to comment on the drinking windows. I haven‘t dared to touch those few youngish bottles I have in the cellar. So just a few data points, for instance the village 2016 (I think) drunk in Dijon a couple years ago was no fun, all wood and tannins. I know I will be excommunicated for this, but at the early stage I prefer another Mugneret, Gerard.
2020 Heresztyn-Mazzini Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Goulots
Sealed with Ardeaseal. Floral aromas with some red berries. Juicy, cool red berries and great acidity to balance it out. Good length. A wine of finesse and subtlety which will probably benefit with further ageing, but also pleasurable now with some air.
Louis Michel 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre 2020: Sooooo good. Oyster shell, iodine, pear, barely ripe peaches, slight citrus, balanced palate, long saline finish. Wonderful.
Clos Yon-Figeac 1998: Auction buy. Dead.
La Rose 1989: Auction buy. Dead.
Clos Yon-Figeac 1998: Bottle #2. Dead.
Château Laroze 1998: Semblance of life. Beautiful nose. Flat palate. Barely hanging on.
Clos Yon-Figeac 1998: 3rd of 3. Barely drinkable but we did so out of spite
Château Tronquoy-Lalande 2016: Same as last time. Finally something we can drink

Amazing day here with a great friend. It was supposed to be a quick coffee and it ended up being a day of music, dead wine and laughter. Life is good.

I like to roll the dice on auction wines, but those ‘98 St Emilions look like someone’s dog dug them up and fetched them for auction. Good for you for taking the hits with humor and gratitude. I’ve never sipped a Louis Michel MdT I didn’t love. That had to soften the blow.
Cheers
Warren
I know ! 13 euros a pop. I figured at that price they were worth a chuckle. I have a couple of other troglodytes in the wine fridge. I need to cull them before October when I’m planning a trip to Burgundy to bring back my various allocations!
Do you live near @David_Bu3ker? You can schedule a tasting of your auction purchases and the lost wines from David’s dad’s cellar.
Drank in Kuala Lumpur with an Aussie steak. Youthful with lots left in the tank but an absolute joy to drink. Shuttled the decanter in and out of the fridge to keep the temp down. This worked a treat and kept the wine bright and fresh
I have mentioned this one before so I will keep it short. This is drinking so well already and is absolutely delicious. I will never get to know how it will age because I am going to drink my 6pack before the year is over probably
2015 Guigal St Joseph blanc Lieu Dit is very good to excellent. Just lots of textbook roussanne nuttiness and honeysuckle along with some herbality, zest. As interesting as it was a few years ago but I get the sense it is early in transition from youthful intensity to a more mature state. Worth trying to find a few more. 4- out of 5.
2013 Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino
Showing some development, and looked a bit sullen on opening but sprang to life with an hour of air. Shows maturing dark cherries, camphor and spice, leather and cigar box. Tannins quite refined, lovely savoury expression. The table liked it a lot despite my early reservations that it was a tad advanced.
Yes, it is a must if you like this style. I have been buying those for almost ten years now.
18 Grapes, Naxos Greece .
House Wine made from grapes grown by the family who owns the boutique hotel we are staying at in Naxos. Yummy.
La Sirène de Giscours 2012 - 500ml, restaurant purchase (not a bargain at 55 CHF but it was the only smaller format of interest)
Meh. Delicate, red-fruited, decent acidity, a little thin on the mid-palate and a somewhat short finish. The flavours are enjoyable (red berries, light spices, a touch of leather) but overall there is nothing really forcing us to take notice. Obviously at the price paid in this restaurant, there is no value there.
Some CT notes and web reviews mention that the wine is (was?) dark fruited and concentrated. This bottle was not.
Agree that Kirschenmann Vineyard Zins are both enjoyable and quite different from what most zins tend to be. Tried a Sandlands a few years ago with similar notes and really loved it. Thanks for the tasting note.
96 Ducru was really in the zone. 05 Chapelle d’Ausone was more open than I expected but really needs more time
2018 Carlo Revello & Figli Barolo
It is supposed to be something special … and it is. The cork a bit gunky but the content seems fine. Very concentrated, with good grip and acidic bite, with a touch of rest sugar. Smoke, spice, salt, stone, slightly overripe quince, a whiff of petrol. Should appeal to both Riesling and Jura fans. It would be interesting to try an aged one.
