What bottle of wine did you open today? (Part 2)

Called “rice wine”, though not really a wine. Anyway, for dinner of tempura udon (ebi, ika, eggplant & sweet potato), some Dassai 39 saké.

2001 Cuvee du Vatican Sixtine

Started with the cheese, and then went looking for a wine to go with it. This pairing was a good one.

Offline Berserker event in Miami this past Friday. No detailed notes, but we had a total blast.

After a very interesting presentation of the new German wine laws, and tasting lead by Annette Schiller at the DC German Wine Society last night, I decided to pull an older German bottle to enjoy tonight.
I opened a 2001 St Urbans Hof Liewener Laurentiuslay Auslese. Botrytis nose. Still very sweet, apricot palate with a very long finish kind of like angel food cake, better than I expected.

For the pasta course at an Italian dinner last night, a couple of bottles of 2019 Quintarelli Bianco Secco.

For the assorted carved meats, I brought (among others) some 2009 Prunotto Barbaresco Bric Turot.

(Rabbit, porchetta & veal, all flown in from Italy)

Opened these for my wife’s birthday last weekend. Everything showed well and paired nicely with Steak Diane.

Di Costanzo 2021 Chardonnay. Delightful!

Yesterday, I had the Lagier-Meredith Mondeuse which I reviewed and kinda blew my mind, but before that I had a 2021 Patricia Green PN that I failed to mention. It was friggin’ excellent, too. All my Patricia Greens have been amazing over the years - never a dud. A little more immediate and ready to drink than Marcus Goodfellows stuff, but they’re both cut from the same cloth and magical wines.

Albert Morot Beaune Teurons 1er Cru 2008
The nose did not bode too well: forest floor and slightly stewed fruits. However, it’s still alive. The tanins are fine and still grippy, tart red berries and some subtle floral notes. Short but the tannic bite calls for another sip. Very enjoyable with a rare bavette. Glad I just bought a few but they will get drunk soon.

Edit: 1 hour in and the fruit is waking up. This is adding to the enjoyment.

2020 Malvira Roero Arneis…pleasant nose, I said “Peach”, my wife said she liked the nose but wdn’t commit to a descriptor…citrus and salinity on the palate with a health dose of acidity…food friendly, also wallet friendly, good QPR

2005 Durueil Janthial Rully 1er “Molesme” - definitely mature, some fruit and med/med- acid with a strong Nilla wafer / creamy vanilla note.
Sidenote- no idea the story behind the wine or vineyard as CT doesn’t have anything on this vintage, only 03-04. Found the bottle in a wineshop basement in Paris. Only reference on google was Winesearcher having a landing page on it. DJ website doesn’t show historical bottlings. :man_shrugging:

Enjoyable?

Same caviste, different day…

The Vacqueyras was served before the Gigondas, fortunately.

2011 Vacqueyras: Clean nose, dark fruited and very little garrigue. The palate shows evolution on the fruit but lovely acidity. A bunch of fine gained tanins hit the gums with a tad of bitterness on the finish. Good.

2012 Gigondas: More fruit than the Vacqueyras on the nose and palate, lots of freshness but serious fine tanins that hit hard. Hints of wood. Good and slightly better than the Vacqueyras.

Well done.

Interesting and enjoyable for sure. definitely felt different to some of their late 2000s rully blancs I’ve had with that super strong vanilla note.

Last nights temptation… decided to give the 98 a try.

very elegant, tannins integrated, cherries and leather on the nose…lacking the power of the 97.

Ooh nice, tried this one last year and quite liked it. If you have any left I’m told it got better and better in the following days

Terrific first post!

I have 2 more left, in which I will give a much longer decant as this bottle was decanted for 3 hrs.

Thank you for the tip!

2019 Poesia - Bit of a surprise! Beautiful garnet color. Nose of lead pencil, spiced pear and some floral like marigolds (odd). Palate was intense black plum fruit. Tannins very apparent today. Will try again tomorrow. But yeah, good juice!
