What bottle of wine did you open today? (Part 2)

Pleasant surprise this Monday night. Pairing with home made lasagna made with plant-based meat.

Maturing plum on the nose and palate. Bright but not astringent. Great balance with medium body of fruit. Yum.

2024 Romain Guiberteau ‘Chai de la Dive’ Saumur RosĂ©

I know that it’s a refreshing summer drink, but it’s summer here in Manila area. This was a handy last-minute throw-in-the-suitcase before I left NYC last week. Impressed with its freshness and sufficient serious complexity. 100% cabernet franc.

Balut and rose never crossed my mind. I think balut needs some spicy herby peppery element to counter the richness, or that’s how I grow up eating balut.

One of the best Bordeaux, I’ve had in a long time. Fully tertiary with all that brings with it. Lovely balance, fruit still evident; finish long; wine complex.

Appreciate the comment. Note that I’ve not had had balut for, maybe at least 25 years before this and local beers was what worked well as far as I can recall. Also, I’m pretty much a wine beggar here that can’t be chooser with the majority of my stash being kept in NYC. However, the mineral and chalky notes of the Loire Valley rosĂ© provided some semblance of credibility to the balut pairing. Having thought about it a bit more, I would surmise that Rhone Valley whites, with plenty heft and peppery stuff, would be something that would go better with balut.

I eat balut with roasted pepper salt, calamansi and Vietnamese cilantro which has this tannic spicy herbal note to counter the gameyness of the duck. White Rhîne sounds like a good pairing since it can hit all of those accompaniments’ notes.

A fabulous Japanese Kerner , like a cross between a Condrieu and a GG Riesling. Floral but a great acid spine.

No picture, but we opened our last bottle of 2016 Carlisle “Carlisle Vineyard” Zinfandel last night and it was wonderful. Our most recent bottle, about a year ago, didn’t show as well and failed to impress in a tasting of 2016 SVD Carlisle zins. This bottle would’ve been a standout in that tasting. Sad to say there are no more left in the cellar. On to 2017 and 2018

My friend @AlbertH was in town and we did a delicious family style meal at our club, Art of Cellaring San Antonio

this is one of the crazier bottle lineups I’ve seen on here recently

It was a really good night with lots of unicorns I might not have again. The takahiko blanc de noirs was the most memorable for me, but there were no bad bottles. Pretty decent Monday for the 7 of us :face_with_spiral_eyes:

How was the 21 aux etelois? One of the few WK wines I don’t have

Yeah I was just about to say, some serious unicorn slaying :unicorn:

94 d’Angerville Ducs 375 — One of my favorite all-time wine purchases, I bought a ton of this for $45/btl. Each has been good. Some nearly great. All satisfying. This verged on great. Perfectly mature with plenty of remaining fruit, predominately tart cherries. Angular but soulful. I think I have 2 or 3 left.

the world needs more small format

Yes, more 500ml bottles would be good - at times 750ml is just too much for two

At a Beaucastel dinner last night, the 2009 Beaucastel Hommage à Jacques Perrin was a bit puzzling to me, as it was big, lush, and definitely made its presence felt; yet, it somehow didn’t make me want to take a second pour

unlike this 2023 Beaucastel Roussanne Vieilles Vignes Blanc of which I immediately accepted a second, and even third pour.
