This was beautiful last night. Dark fruited and ripe but decidedly old world in tone. Still structured but the tannins are hidden behind the fruit. At a nice inflection point of maturity—open and generous but not yet tertiary. A winner, particularly given that it cost me $59.99 from Envoyer.
On holiday in Hungary - a nice Egri Csillag, blend of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Olaszrisling and Hárslevelű. Quite rich with stone fruits and honeysuckle with a nice finish.
Hárslevelű is possibly the most fun wine word to say.

2021 Ridge Lytton Springs
Didn’t take detailed notes as this was opened at dinner on our Greek cruise. The wine list said Three Valleys and the sommelier brought out the Lytton Springs for the same price! Bright red fruit, pepper and a little of the Dry Creek soil on the nose. Nice acidity and grippy tannins that were in balance. It’s only got 4 years, but it was in a good window tonight!

Château Lalande d’Auvion 2000
From my FIL’s cellar (now that we see the bottles we can select some!). This is representative of most of his Bordeaux: bottles from relatively unknown châteaux that have been forgotten for 25-30 years in his cellar.
This was pretty good and totally drinkable! Musky, feral, tertiary nose and palate. This is mostly savoury but with some red berries still kicking in there and bright acidity. The tannins have all integrated. Slight touch of VA but you get used to it after your first glass. This was paired with what was announced as a leek Flammekueche but turned out to be a runny leek quiche and a rather inconvenient pairing. I’ll try again tonight with whatever is served.
Not how we envisioned getting starting last night with @Steve_McL . Totally premoxed '20 From Tribut. Bummer. But a reality. Can sort of see the color difference in the '20 Fevre next to it.
Mad a good recovery, though, with this '12 Dauvissat Clos that was on point.
Dang!!! I’ve never had a premoxed Tribut! What a bummer. That 12 Dauvissat Clos is epic though! I had one for my birthday earlier this year and it was gorgeous.
First for me as well on Tribut. The Dauvissat really couldn’t do much more. In a great spot.

Caroline Morey Chassagne-Montrachet 2021 red, delicate infusion of tart red berries, florals, and bright Pinot aromatics, full of finesse and lift. Just missing a bit of mid-palate gourmandise, with a hint of green on the finish.
Wild color!
Wow! What a lineup!!
Was the 80 Yquem 750ml or half bottle, and how did it show? My half bottle feels ready to drink, at least judging by the color (pretty dark)
Also, how was the 1980 privee magnum? Have a bottle but wasn’t sure when to open it.
Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the white Burgs…

Fortunately, we found some things to “tide” us over in our time of grief.
This looks more like cherry cough syrup
A couple of Bordeaux this week:
Château Coquillas - Pessac-Léognan - 2014
This sells for 15 to 20€, so a Pessac-L equivalent of a Cru Bourgeois. This is a very decent wine, with earthy P-L aromas and tastes along with red cherry and blackberry, quite elegant and stylish, with a long finish, not overdone, not over-oaked, a classical profile, altogether a wine I’d buy again without any hesitation. 91 pts
La Réserve de la Comtesse - Pauillac 2015
Rather disappointing after the 11, 14 and 16. Plenty of rich, creamy blackberry, but very marked by the vintage and I suspect the Merlot was a little overripe. It doesn’t really scream Pauillac, still less PLL terroir, just tasting rather generic. Hopefully it will improve once the baby fat disappears but at the moment, there are lots of Crus Bourgeois that taste better in 2015. 89 pts
That 2020 Meix Cadot is a gem. I need to stop drinking mine. I purchased 9 and I’m already through 4 of them! ![]()
