What bottle of wine did you open today? (Part 2)

Morgen Long X-Omni 2020 off the list at Angler. Crikey this was good, straight fireworks from start to finish. Reductive nose but not on the palate, just layers and layers of citrus and mineral with great oak framing. Real depth to this wine. We started with a very good Vilmart GCDO 17 I brought in and finished with d’Yquem 2019 which was generously shared by the restaurant as a friend is a chef, and this X Omni was absolutely the star of the show.

There is discussion about the pricing of this producer, but there’s no doubting the quality. A wine that made me immediately look for bottles to acquire for the cellar.

2 bottles among a few others that I hurriedly threw from my wine fridge into a suitcase for my stay here.

Drank with 3 others at dinner at M Dining & Bar in Makati (Manila).

Laherte-Frères Blanc de Blancs Ultradition
Enjoyed the nice mineral, fruit and savory balance. Good length and impressed with the general food-friendliness.

2005 Le Vieux Donjon Chateauneuf-du-Pape
Don’t get to drink much CdP lately but this was a pleasant old-school Southern Rhone with nice complex bouquet and flavors of dark berries, herbs, meat and ground pepper. Some said it’s young, but personally am not big on old or very mature CdP. This drinks well for my taste.

how was the Mendes Alvarinho?

brave, very brave…and apparently reward for same…my eperiences with LLC < 20 yrs old not all that favorable

Good. We brought this to a lunch and our friends had never had an Alvarinho before. It was less aromatic than it can be and less incisive as well which worked out well with the crowd. It’s still lemon, salt and rocks but it’s got a slightly polished/richness on the mid-palate. Good QPR.

thanks for getting back to me ,will see if I can get my hands on some…sounds like my kind of wine…Have heard all sorts of good things about Mendes and his wines but have never tried one

The 2017 Parcela Única was a “wow” wine for me.

thanks for the followup, probably not gonna be able to get my hands on a 2017

very nice wines enjoyed in the weekend
Love Germain - a regal Meursault, still in a young fase.
Joblot was lovely, but I must admit it lacks a bit of elegance and stature. Maybe too young.

1968 Martin Ray California Cabernet Sauvignon

This was a pleasant surprise.Needed a couple of hours to blow off an initial funkiness, would seem to have been a ripe vintage. Had it alongside an 86 Ahlgren Bates Ranch which was more classically styled. Not a bad evening.

2023 Louis Michel et Fils Chablis
I went by to pick up a few 2022s (Village, Forêts, Grenouilles and Clos) at the domaine on my way back from Champagne and I picked up some 2023 Village as well. It’s not the greatest vintage for this. There is a slight herbal quality that along with the reduction feels a little off. Next bottle, I’ll try to give it a lot of air and see if it helps.

Color me surprised because I was expecting good things for the 2023.

Love Vieux Donjon. Tend to buy almost every year. Had the ‘05 recently and agree with you - thought it was drinking well. I do think it can cruise for a while though. That vintage had a ton of structure

Major first world problems - Christopher Tynan 2015 cab and a 2013 Alban Pandora were the only two bottles on the shelf at home. I went with the cab. What a treat. 1/2 bottle decanted into a flask for dinner and savor the rest with a movie later. More rich and brooding than the 2014. The second half will go great with either FP ribeye or burgers tomorrow night.

Fantastic night out at Atoma celebrating a work promotion. Amazing food paired with a wonderful wine. The Masseto had huge nose, scents and flavors of tart cherry, plum skin, thyme and blood. Sublime.

I have a couple of the Dominode and the Aux Guettes from 2012. It’s been years since I opened one. I’ll dig one out of the cellar soon.

Cheers,
Warren

From the cellar of the late Thor Iverson, this bottle is in great shape.

2012 Contucci Vino Nobile di Montepulciano
A bit tannic and maybe rustic, but complex and tasty too with pasta & meatballs.
A glass with dinner, stoppered with a Repour, and will have some more over the next week.

Wonderful to meet up again with @Mark_Golodetz. Great wines; better times.

Both of these were in an excellent place. The ‘95 VT La Crau was a brilliant shine. The ‘89 Chateau Certan was a kaleidoscope and it’s still changing 8hrs later. I think the Certan has a Lot of life ahead of it, the La Crau, less.
