What bottle of wine did you open today? (Part 2)

You’re welcome!

Erlend, do these wines benefit much from age? I’ve got six 2017s I picked up a year ago and just assumed at the time (perhaps wrongly) they should sit. Perhaps I need to get after them!! :wine_glass:

I didnt know about this producer until recently. 2019 was the first vintage I bought so you would know better than me.

2023 Bedrock Evanghelo Zinfandel. So good - long and lingering on the palate, with great acidity. Yeah, it’s young, but I like it electric like this.

@Morgan_Twain-Peterson rec from a podcast a few weeks ago. Hadn’t heard of it, likely never would have, tracked down this older bottle and it was really nice. Very aromatic, little bit of bite and crunch from the tannins. Flavor profile for me was surprisingly reminiscent of an earthy/herbal style of Pinot. Nice to try something out of the ordinary for me.

2018 KE La Voleuse. Opened around noon and poured 1/2 into a 375 for tomorrow and a bit into a glass to open up. Drank with an early dinner and the rest over a couple of hours.
Plenty of sediment has already settled in the bottle so next one will get a decant. This is some epic juice.

Both yummy wines.

Okay the label. So a bottle of red cascaded down my 4 inch weld mesh racking and splashed a few labels. Doesn’t change the contents.
Grated Ginger, custard apple, praline, still energetic but drink them if you got ‘em!

A good time had by all at the local tapas place.

That 2016 must still be mostly dill on the palate with gobs of fruit, no?

Disclaimer: we sell this.
Delavenne Aura de Marius
Pinot Noir, 6g/l, 5 years on lees.
I expected more richness out of this but after my surprise, I really liked it for what it was. Balanced, slight spices, unripe peach and ripe citrus. The profile doesn’t scream PN. Medium+ finish with agreeable bitterness.

Chateau Angelus 2013
Deep dark bordeaux robe. Red berries, slight smoke, spices, damp earth and slate. Medium bodied, bright red berries, medium acidity and fine tannins on the palate. Long finish on slate, red cherries, thyme and a little torrefaction. Good wine, good pairing with truffled croque-monsieur and braised duck and Tomme sandwiches. Very enjoyable. Is it first growth quality?

Remoissenet Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers 2012
Wonderful nose of ripe red berries. Burgundian palate of sweet red cherries, red florals and spices. Elegant, lacy, balanced and lovely. Drink now. It won’t get any better.

Rossignol-Trapet Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 2016
Didn’t quite hold up to the Remoissenet. Red berried with medium plus acidity. Medium finish. Good but lacking on the mid-palate and finish.

It acts its age. Dark fruited but a nice sense of depth already.

For my 45th birthday party of 6 people we opened some birthyear Margaux (‘79) as well as some 1980 Armagnac, ‘13 Rhys Horeshoe Vineyard Pinot, ‘16 Turnbull Pierra cab, Chavost, and some other fun treats (including the ‘22 Lukas Hammelmann Rotor Burg).
After the mags and the Margaux, it turned into people opening whatever they were feeling from our wine collection.

This was my first time having a Bordeaux (or any wine) this old. The second bottle was definitely better and more alive than the first (and the cork on that bottle was also much more sound). Wonderful tobacco and leather flavors.
Most guests enjoyed the ‘16 Napa Cab more, but I was much more into experiencing the layers of that Margaux!

On the ‘13 Rhys, I know there have been issues with the corks on these. This mag smelled very funny for the first 5 minutes (like vinegar)…but then blew off and was lovely. Not as great as the last one I remember us having back in 2020, but still very good.

Great wine for a song. I’ve had some very old bottles that showed well. Depending on your cellar space, and on your age and life expectancy, you might consider buying a case or two and cellaring them. Maybe next to the Olga Raffault Chinon, Rancia, CVNE…

I have a (3x) vertical going from '17 on.

How was the Chavost? I only had the Blanc de Meunier (brut nature) and it was not good.

It was fine. I would buy it again at $45-50. My wife has a strong preference for smaller bubbles, and she felt the Chavost bubbles were much too big.
We prefer Julien Prelat Presle BdB at the same price point.
