What bottle of wine did you open today? (Part 2)

I’ve never had a Burgundy that tastes like a Napa cab, but my wife and I agree that this wine does that. Luckily, after 17 days in Europe, we were craving a “Napa cab-like wine”

What a strange bottle. Embossed glass for a Burgundy, green label. Don’t see Burgundy bottles like that often.

Right?! We love Berthaut-Gerbet’s Fixin Burgs, so we thought we would try this Domaine’s wine. Could not have been more different.

Delamotte BdB 2014

  • Energetic mousse. Lemony up front, acidity bright but in check. Maybe a hint of a doughy note? This wine has a cleanliness to it that scours the mouth in the mid palate. Then the return of citrus and mineral notes through the finish. This was… unremarkable. Much better bubbles for the money elsewhere, at least at this juncture.

Droin Grand Cru Grenouilles 2019

  • Wonderful showing. Can smell it in the glass from a few feet away. Palate is lemon curd, candied lemon, citrus oils, something tangerine-y. Good cut. Oak in the background lending the slightest butterscotch. Bit of waxy texture, then powerfully saline through the finish, with flecks of lemon returning near the conclusion. This is a wine with real depth. Fabulous Chablis in a warm vintage and wish I had more. One of my favorite Chardonnays in recent memory.

I don’t know if this makes me a good Berserker or a bad Berserker, but I’ve started selectively drinking wines in 3-3/8 inch bottles, because they take up too much space in my bins. (In my bins I can fit eight 3-3/8” bottles, or eleven 3-1/4” bottles.) So far on this holiday weekend we’ve opened:

2021 Goodfellow Pinot Gris,
2022 Jacob Martin Gamay,
2005 Nysa Pinot Noir, and
2017 Goodfellow Berserker Cuvée PN

All great wines, but now I have room for more! :wine_glass:

I endorse this approach! I’m in a similar spot.

Domaine De Moor Bourgogne blanc Le Vendangeur Masqué 2022

Had my first De Moor yesterday. Really interesting and good wine. Freshly opened chalk and gypsum on the nose, opens quickly and initially shows pome fruit aromas. Yellow apple and the like. With a little bit more air, the wine gains more complexity and opens up. A light barrique aroma (popcorn) is added.
An attractive wine that shows its natural wine ‘character’, but is quite clean and complex. 2022 is already open and can be enjoyed with sufficient air.

Lou Dumont, Bourgogne Blanc 2022.
Fairly subtle nose of lemon zest and pineapple. Very light yellow colour indicating some oak. Pretty easygoing in the mouth with lemons and cream, and not overly acidic. Quite some tropical fruits present. Really nice entry level wine, but if the prices I see on google are true then the hype is perhaps pushing it a bit far.
Just a comfy malo’lovely chardy.

Passetoutgrain by Jeremy Recchione, a mix of Gamay and PN. Upon opening yesterday the banana notes from the Gamay was quite apparent and the wine was not fully in place somehow. Very light and typical of a vin de soif. I didn’t enjoy it very much. Today after 24 hours of air it’s as if it all merged together and the PN took the reins. The nose is now dominated by sour cherries and the tropical fruits adding a playful touch. The acidity and the tannins are on the lighter side. Paid the equivalent to 45€ here in Jeju, but if it’s on the shelf for half it’d make a wonderful wine for BBQ.

Liaison 2018 by Enderle & Moll. It smelled just amazing yesterday of ripe cherries and menthol lifted by a touch of VA. The wine was very fruit forward and is as well today, but the biggest issue right now is that it’s become a little bit clumsy, as the smell and taste now is very plum and prune dominant. There’s more merlot about it today 24 hours later, but the acidity is still present to keep everything in check and maybe even a tiny mouse has come out to play? Despite this, I will be very happy to reach for a Spätburgunder next time I see one.

Such a nice value buy. Would appeal very much to nebbiolo drinkers I’d say.

The bottle appears to be levitating.

Have our kids around over Thanksgiving weekend. Have had 1999 Ridge MB, 2015 Zilliken Rausch Spatlese and 2014 Drouhin PM Folatieres so far.

The MB was rich and long. Pretty mature - very smooth - but probably does not have as much complexity as the best MBs. Still, enjoyed it very much.

The Zilliken was an excellent Spatlese. Well balanced with beautiful flavors, this will keep aging for a long time.

The Drouhin was a beautiful wine. While this should continue to age for a long time, right now it seems to have a very nice combination of fruit flavors and more mature flavors. Very well balanced and a joy to drink.

At no extra cost

I just love that climat. I don’t think I’ve ever had a bad one.

Magdelaine was sadly hit badly by TCA.

So I went for some approachable 2021 Burgundy. All about the cherries, liquorice and subtle, but noticable, sweet’ish oak notes. I really like these entry level reds from Simon Colin. But as they have a rather dark cherry profile from a vintage like 2021, I fear they might not be my cup of tea in a warmer vintage. But only one way to find out I guess…

for koji and jae hwa, you are looking for the bourgogne pinot noir vielles vignes with the white label. what you drank is from the regular lou dumont collection (negoce).

Special occasions merit big bottles. And as a flashback to the old days it has to be an old favorite: Rhone Meridional.

'14 Beckmen Purisma Red (100% syrah). One of only a few mags, and had been holding that one since purchasing during a futures tasting. Really in a good spot and I’m glad I opened it at ~10 years old. Drank over several hours on Thurs.
2016 Mending Wall Tournahu. Big, lots of fruit, oak Napa cab and is always a crowd pleaser.
The other two are on deck for some time in December.
