Agree that it’s a lovely wine, and a year or so ago, it was showing some nice tertiary development. 15 years plus with some mature notes and a good five to ten years from over the hill I think constitutes a decent ager.
2020 Joseph Colin Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Les Murgers des Dents de Chien
- First experience with this producer and it was a good one—does anyone in the Colin family make a bad wine? Anyway, on open there’s reduction on the nose but perhaps less than I expected. Entry has this lovely sort of tingling acidity, a brightness rather than bracing that persists all the way through. With air and a couple of hours this filled out nicely—pear, citrus fruit, floral, good texture. In the background, the slightest hint of oak to complete things.
I picked up some of his 22s recently and am looking forward to grabbing more of his wines.
Kumpf & Meyer 2015 Cramant
Moitie-moitie Auxerrois Chardonnay.
85 months in lees and zero dosage
Super autolytic, yeasty but fresh. A little bit tangy and pithy on the finish. Serious fun.
Enjoyed Will’s Violin 2021 Sojeau Vineyard Pinot Noir last evening. This was really nice PNP and just grew in complexity over the course of the evening. Wonderful stuff.
Ive loved his wines ive had!
Turning into the cliché here, I’m afraid to say.
Went to Ruth Chris’s the other night (cliche 1) here in Jacksonville, FL. Agreed to try the lighter Oregon PN with the steaks and the other wine drinker in the party agreed, aha, yes, thet’s what he likes too, lighter reds. It comes first by the glass and it’s really nice (forget what it was). Then the smooth operating bartender offers us to try the 2021 Faust Cab from Napa and we say, sure. We pivot immediately and now want that all of a sudden, including myself (cliche 2). “It’ll go better with the steaks”, I hear myself say like an apparatchik (cliche 3).
Anyway, the bottle was a bit tight open opening, so while we decanted, the smooth operating bartender kept pouring us from the open BTG bottle. Nice wine, felt a little more restrained at 14.5% than most Napas and with no offensive oak programming. I know nothing about this producer, but I’d give this a solid 92-93pts. Would buy again.
I had this wine a few weeks ago and was substantially impressed. A little rustic but superbly balanced and developing nicely
100% agreement.
The cliché steakhouse saga continue - tonight a sad dinner by myself in the hotel Morton’s Steakhouse bar whilst the thunderstorm rolled in outside. I went for the BTG Raymond Napa Valley at the bar (sorry couldn’t see a vintage). What is there to say? Sucralose and jammy and everything you’d expect from a “competitively priced” Napa Cab. To me, this is a 85pts “engineered” wine, but I’m sure it has its followers. Seems to average 91pts on CT.
Better off with a good martini
Sansonniere — gelinettes 2013
Slightly bretty nose with ripe berries and plum. Classic grolleau licorice notes in the mouth. Heavy tannins and a dusty quality due to the age. Very nice but nowhere near as refined as the whites.
Pedres Blanques 2019
Ripe berries and a slight whiff of VA upon opening. It’s a very fragrant and elegant glass, with an abundance of fruits and a good load of tannins and acidity. Just way too young at this point. I’ve put 2029 as the start drink year for my personal stash, but will keep monitoring.
Labet Macvin - Les exaltes
While I own many many bottles from the Labets, I’ve strangely enough never had the Macvin.
It’s a very beautiful example of that style and seamlessly structured. I was very impressed. It’s on the somewhat “lighter” side of what they can be style wise. If I can I’ll load up.
L’Anglore — Pierre Chaude 2020
Tried to get something with as much age as possible, but this was as old as we could get. Floral, inky, concentrated. It never really became open for business, until I popped it open three days later. Very blocky on average, and I think it needs 5 more years to show its true colors.
2019 Gérard Boulay Sancerre La Comtesse - just a really nicely made Sancerre, very elegant with a touch of sweetness that is very enjoyable.
2016 Château Larcis Ducasse - First of a case of 6, I planned to wait 10 years but ran out of patience as I was deciding what to open last night. Very glad I did. Decanted for a couple of hours, the nose is so strong in black cherry you could mistake it for an actual case of black cherries in syrup and that follows through on the palate but not in any way overbearing. Very smooth initially and then the tannins leave a fairly dry finish as to be expected for a wine this age, but they are definitely well integrated enough for it to be very pleasurable. Terrific QPR on this, debating whether to get another case as I’d like to drink more over the next few years, but also have some at 25+ years old.
I love the diversity of wine in this thread!
The only Bachelet I’ve ever had was an 18 Côte de Nuits Villages and I wasn’t a huge fan. I need to give this producer a real shot in a better vintage with one of the Gevreys.
And give it some time. I like the CdNV, but the ‘05 and ‘06 are drinking well now. I find that wine to be rough/tough when young.
2015 Patricia Green Cellars Olenik Vineyard, Wadensvil Block. Three-hour decant. Enjoyed over six hours. A really nice perfumed nose (that I suspect I can come to expect with most anything Jim does with the Wadensvil clone) that included notes of tea leaf and occasional hints of watermelon. Much of the evening I would just sit and enjoy the nose on this wine, without taking a sip. In the mouth the wine blossoms with intense fruit, with a finish that lasts easily thirty seconds or longer. This wine seems to be in a wonderful place right now. Wonderful stuff.
