What bottle of wine did you open today? (Part 2)

Yep. Have my bottles of III. Going to open one soon.

2021 Pepeire Briords

Is there a better $20 bottle of wine out there? No way. Nope.

2021 Freycinet Pinot Noir (Tasmania)
This is quite a delicate Pinot, but it’s oh so pretty with red cherries, cranberries and a touch of savoury. It’s bright and energetic and with fine balance. Worth seeking out.

2018 Yarra Yering Underhill Shiraz
Whole bunchy, jubey black fruits. Seductive with good richness and soft, silky, juicy palate. Lovely wine.

2010 Brezza Barolo
Liquorice, tar and rose petals - textbook mid-weight traditional style Barolo now starting to drink rather well.

2016 Chateau Filhot Sauternes
Marzipan and vanilla, nicely savoury, and mercifully ‘just’ sweet. Generously flavoured and coats the palate.

2015 Davis Estates Phase 5

Underwhelming. PnP. Slowly unfurled a nose of blackberry, blueberry and a little pomegranate, shielding some alcohol. Taste of undiscernable black and blue fruits, and slowly building fine tannin. Opened a touch over the hour, but overall felt flat. Closest comparison I could make was to an average warm vintage Bordeaux opened 5-10 years after release. While this was a gift, I couldn’t help but think this was exemplary of everything wrong with Napa wines right now. Fancy bottle, aimed upmarket, but the underlying wine is competing with others at 1/10 of the price.

Lovely cherry fruit with cedar and pencil notes. Excellent for €11.50.

Tasty, still zippy fruit, with a color that has gone tawny. May be fading. My last of two bottles; the one a couple years ago was more impressive.

Matias Michelini, one of my favorite wine makers down here. Also this one has one of the coolest names of a wine. Unfortunately he only makes this Sauv Blanc for a white. I say unfortunately because it’s not my preferred grape but at least he makes something unique with it and avoids most of the grassy and grapefruit aspects. His Cab Franc is what I really like. The Pinot Noir marred by a little brett in most vintages. He’s on the cusp of being a true natural maker but I believe he does use some sulfur.

Assume that was to me.

Took about 3 hours to fully open up. All the typical CR notes. Last glass the best.

I believe my first Terrasses.

Crazy QPR as I paid about $55 per

2017 Domaine du Cerberon Pommard
This was actually in a lovely spot, bright and crunch red/black fruits with moss and herbs, but lovely gossamer tannins and real length. Balanced savoury finish. Performed way above my expectations.

A bit flabby on opening, but the last glass was singing.

Great stuff - am I right in guessing that you’re touring the Loire?!

We are having a week’s R&R near Loche, probably heading towards Chinon today.

Well have a great time - you chose the right time for decent weather - and keep the notes coming - plus any restaurant recommendations !

Enough Chinon my other half cried today.

Very little Bordeaux with any age in the hypermarche. This does taste of merlot, and has some peppery spice, but I think it needs at least 2 years to fill out. It was only €11 though.

Boy this is still drinking beautifully, I don’t think it has ever shut down.

I had to look up Loche, but I am already visiting vicariously.
