What bottle of wine did you open today? (Part 2)

I had one in January that was totally alive and well.
I have a few more and don’t know whether to wait longer, or not.

Both were open for business. La Forest will easily continue to develop but already showed a lot of complexity. The Village Chablis will easily keep as well, but was really in the zone for my pallet. I’ve added my notes below!

Dauvissat Chablis: Tidal pool and iodine on the nose. Searing limestone mineral intensity. Juicy citrus and acid that rips. Power … Pressure … So raw … Pure Chablis. The best village level Chablis I’ve tasted. I’ve had this wine many times in many different vintages, but this wine, this vintage, perfection :ok_hand:

Dauvissat La Forest: Drank side by side with the village Chablis and this was no slouch. It was clearly the same producer and showed the same classic tidal pool nose with intense mineral / saline notes. It showed a lot more complexity, more weight and more everything, but was maybe a touch sweater/rounder to its detriment. Both wines were lovely, but I really treasured the village wine for its focus. The La Forest was the better charcuterie or dinner pairing, but the village Chablis was made for oysters.

2017 Goodfellow Richard’s Cuvee - Still tastes young. Citrus, green apple, spicy, and a long finish.

2019 Cameron Clos Electrique Blanc - More mature than the Goodfellow, with a little more extract. Definitely a fatter wine.

1999 Cameron Pinot Noir Brick House - Some Brett in this, but still excellent. Black cherries, spicy and a complete wine. Tastes great from start to finish.

Doug Tunnell sold grapes to a handful of others back when he started, including Cameron. John’s version was 100% whole cluster and had no added sulfites (yikes!). While it has held up well, this is definitely a drink now wine IMHO.

Foreau Vouvray Sec 2019:

I am more than a little pissed off at how good this is. I have been cellaring Huet’s wines for years and never had one, even with significant age, which achieved the heights of this five year old bottle. After being blown away by the 2016 Demi-Sec a few weeks ago, I am inclined to think I have been devoting all my energy on the wrong producer.

This wine is mineral at its core. Flinty, lightly smoky and bursting with sea salt, which I swear you can feel on the tongue. Underneath the foundation of minerals, there is fruit and layers of complexity, each sip bringing new and subtle nuance. It’s not remotely heavy, but it has such presence on the palate with an oily, somewhat creamy mouth coating texture. The finish lasts for minutes.

I enjoyed this while streaming a mind blowing performance of Verdi’s Requiem at the Hollywood Bowl. It was the perfect pairing for the wine; the wine shares the rhythm and changing tempo of the music, gently oscillating between ethereal beauty and thunderous power. It maches the music in both beauty and drama. A wonderful experience I am hoping can be replicated.

2010 Dom. Rion Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Gruenchers

Outstanding! Very nice aromas of mushrooms, sous bois and cherries. The palate is very focused and elegant, plenty of fruit left evidenced by a lovely red cherry note, acidity is well balanced and the length is very good and pleasing. Not sure if I could have opened this at a better time!

2021 Championship Bottle Pinot Blanc Hard Promises

Very nice wine from @Saul_Mutchnick. Pear, white peach, nectarine, and oyster shell minerality. While a little light and subdued on the mouthfeel yesterday, today this wine has woken up a bit and it has gained texture and is more full-bodied. Has a nice glycerine and slightly waxy thing going on the palate.

Looking forward to trying the 2022 that just arrived, after it’s settled down from bottle shock.

It was a good Easter

I usually buy Grivot’s VR in most vintages.

This was bottle #1 out of a pack of 6. Really enjoyed it a lot. Very minerally and saline. Red fruited , with a lot of crushed stones.

I love Ch de Tours. You can really feel the Rayas house style.

Please tell us about the 2001 LdH Vina Tondonia Gran Reserva. I am holding mine but am very curious how it is drinking now

2021 Les Horées Bourgogne-Aligoté En Coulezain - got this off a restaurant list for 80 euros, a decent quaff but not worth the tariff. Lots of strong acidity but not enough fruit to balance the sour component of the wine. It is still a decent drink but more like a 45 euro restaurant bottle. No way near worth the secondary market price.

This lacks the complexity and drama of the superlative Foreau Sec I drank yesterday, though it is a very worthy understudy. Another powerfully mineral wine with electric acidity, concentration and a lightness of touch. Delicious and refreshing, but its best days are almost certainly in front of it.

I’d be very interested to hear what it’s like - I only have one bottle left after a disappointing first one.

I would certainly wait a little longer if you only have one left. On the basis of mine, I wouldn’t say it will start to decline, on the contrary, I think it could get better still.

2018
I know, the aficionados will say it’s decades too soon.
We were off to a bumpy start, Les Picasses and me: too rustic, too dusty … But I am starting to warm up to this bottling.

Just had the 2015 version of this. Ready to go, and fabulous.

@Victor_Hong special. Little dried out and past peak with a heavy cedar note.

I drank the 1993 on Saturday. Better than the 1994.
Just gorgeous, with a slightly honeyed pipe tobacco finish.
