Sociando Mallet 2003
At last! This has been threatening to become really good for several years, but the last one tried two years ago was still stubbornly pinched and compact. Amazingly fresh for a 2003 - in fact there is nothing to suggest a hot vintage at all. Blackberry, plums and raspberry on the nose and much the same on the palate, quite dusty but with a silky elegance midpalate. It has gained the cool suavity it lacked before. It could get even better, but is already a match for the 2001. Excellent stuff and clearly one of the best 2003s.
Two very different wines. A friend came over and I cooked Morgan ranch cowboy as well as a flannery Ribeye.
@M.Kaplan your recommendation for Harbison was great.
1975 Ducru Beaucaillou
A friend brought this over. Pristine bottle. This Ducru was brilliant, drinking a lot younger. It was earthy and fresh at the same time and a lot of fruit left. As the night progressed graphite and pencil shavings emerged. A great example of mature Bordeaux
2014 Vieux Chateau Certan
A completely different wine but so good. Bottle no 3 out of a case of 12. Mostly primary. Very floral nose. Delicious raspberries on the palette. I find this wine very Burgundian and looking forward to tracking its evolution.
perhaps we drank these in the wrong order last night, but all were enjoyable and unique in their own way. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the La Chapelle was a standout and is in an absolutely perfect spot. Big evolution from one year ago. Pure black fruits, leather and tobacco with a pronounced nose. One bottle left in the cellar and may wait another year just to see where it goes next, though I’d love to drink it tonight!
Oh wow, cool to hear this. Just got in some of the 2003 JG.

Showing fantastically. This bottle came from distro, ex cellar 2018
- 2019 François Chidaine Montlouis-sur-Loire Les Tuffeaux - France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Montlouis-sur-Loire (28/3/2024)
A whopping 10g/l residual sugar (considered low for this cuvee, which is not produced every year), but in no way cloying or overbearing. Cinnamon, quince notes with pure citrus fruit. Read some comments about Chidaine’s wines lacking acidity which I agree with to some extent as it wasn’t at the forefront, but this was still a beautifully balanced and serious wine. (92 pts.)
How open for business were those 2 17’ Dauvissats?
Fan of the La Forest.
