What bottle of wine did you open today? (Part 2)

Like being caned by a schoolmarm?

well, maybe not quite enough to cause lifelong emotional scarring. perhaps a qiuck smack on the knuckles with the ruler.

I’m looking forward to the notes!

'97 Allegrini Amarone. Ymmm.

white burgundy was the theme last night. No surprises for the top wines; Dauvissat Les Clos and Raveneau Foret and the two Corton Charlies were clearly the best wines for everyone in attendance.

2022 Erica Orr Wines Old Vine Chenin Blanc (WA, Columbia Valley). @Erica_O_r_r This was great! Pale lemon color, Medium-minus bodied, lemon and pear on the nose, transitioning to stonier fruits on the palate — without the tropical sourness on the finish. It was kind of like a Venn Diagram of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscat (I think). And 12% ABV to boot!

Reverdy Sancerre Rouge Les Villots 2022
Floral nose with ripe griottes as well. Lively palate with plenty of acidity, griottes, some earthy tones, some herbs and pepper on the finish. The tannins are present, fine but a little harsh. Enjoyable for 12 euros.

08 Dominus paired with Flannery ribeyes.

From last night.

Wowsa this is good juice. The flavor profile built in the glass and really popped with the steak. The primary fruit has transitioned to secondary notes. I’m not always great at pulling the tasting notes out of a wine but I feel this is in a great drinking zone now.

This was my quarterly lunch to the same nice restaurant with a great affordable wine list. For the first time, Madame, dearest wife, better half, also joined me. I had the ris de veau while my dearest love had a burger (against my recommendation and she should have listened).

2008 Savigny-lĂšs-Beaune 1er Cru La Dominode Bruno Clair
I debated between this, a 2020 Volnay Clos des ChĂȘnes Fontaine-Gagnard and a 2004 G-C Ostrea from Trapet. Don’t know how the others fare but this was a lot of fun. On a nice plateau with an evolved nose (little fruit, beef stock, earth) but a nice palate: red-berries, forest floor, button mushroom, red florals and mix of rich spices. Lovely. Good acidic cut and good length.

Balthazar Chaillot 2019.
Wow the Wine jumps right out of the glass with an intense aroma. This is very much Cornas but the smell is still very refined and not at all over the top. Blue berries, red berries, iron and a little leefe note as well. Great nose!
Taste is very intense and the wine is obviously too young. As I drink a lot of wine from Piemonte I could actually enjoy this now, but I reckon much people would prefer this with more age.

For me this style of Cornas is towards the lean and structured side but still with decent fruit. I really enjoyed it, but prices are also following up unfortunately.

This was much lighter than expected ( and a recent CSG), prominent acidity, this is nice claret but won’t make old bones, ***.

Crazy! I had the exact same wine last night. (No photo.)

Did you decant? In my experience, Ch. Senejac tends to gain a bit of weight after a lot of air. My last glass was the best, after it had been in the decanter for 6 hours.

2012 LdH Vina Gravonia. Pale to mid yellow, v sl oxidative nose but the palate just blasts throigh it like there is no tomorrow. Deep and concentrated and very long. Some citrus notes but also some honey and beeswax elements. This is just wonderful to drink right now but will certainly age. Best USD26 I ever spent (but only got 2 bottles)

Just cracked a 2022 Emrich-Schönleber Mineral trocken while watching the basketball.

Robert-Denogent Pouilly-Fuissé Climat Vieilles Vignes 2021
Made from selected parcels in vintages where single parcels are not made (low yields, etc.). I love this stuff
Tight, coiled preserved lemon and rocks. It drinks like a bow and arrow ready to strike. But when you think this could be lean, acidic and short the mid-palate hits with all kinds of ripe citrusy goodness and chewiness. Medium+ finish on the same. We had this with wild sea bass and shrimps in sorrel sauce and coconut rice. Yeah, all good.

I did decant, I started drinking about 90 minutes in and finished at around 4 hours.

Interesting. I don’t think the 2016s are going to win any full-bodied contests, but it sounds like my bottle showed a bit better. I’m having friends over tomorrow so I might pop another.
