That is an excellent and evocative tasting note. Nicely done sir!
2010 Bertheau Bonne mares
Rich, red-black fruited, med tart, grippy, gritty, touch of gunflint. 13.5% Alc.
Liked this quite a lot once it warmed and woke up.
Steen Öhman (Winehog) calls Bonne Mares the “Darker side of Chambolle” I would agree. Tastes like the love child of MSD and Chambolle, but by the map, Bertheau’s parcel is smack in the middle of the Chambolle part Bonne Mares.
The 2019 Jouan MSD 1er Sorbes was a contrastingly rustic glass of stinky-Pinot (not in a bad way). Young and kind of pushy to tell you all about its dark-fruited garrigue charms.
Strikes me as “old-school” Burgundy; kind of “take me as I am” and unapologetic, though I don’t actually know the details of his winemaking process. Should be interesting to see how this matures.
2020 Maltroye Chassange 1er Clos de la Maltroye monopole.
This was so delicious it just magically disappeared…
Light lemon, balanced; has Jean-Pierre Cournut’s signature reductive stony gunflint notes in the foreground, which I like a lot, but ymmv.
Went great with Persian grilled fish and rice with fava beans (Baghali polow)
2019 Averæn Croft Vineyard Pinot Noir
Very nice nose of red berries, spices and some oak. Feels quite fresh, red berries on the palate, good acidity and decent length.
This is the driest tasting young kabinett I can remember drinking. I am guessing there is around 25 grams per liter of residual sugar. Tastes more like 10. Lots of green apple raciness, some licorice and smoke, and a long mineral laced finish. Uber refreshing and an excellent value.
This is why I love the wines from Jura so much.
100% Savagnin ouillé. Huge fruit profile, but it just doesn’t feel heavy, because the of the laser beam acidity and intense lemon notes. It has the most delicious salty mineral note. Oh so salty! A low sulfites wine, but clean as a whistle. Such an intense wine which is evolving beautifully (tasted it for the first time in June 2022).
There is a lot of talk about natural wine on this board. For me the Fromont’s takes the perfect approach. If their white wines require a bit of sulfites to be stable, they will add it, but only if they need it.

I like your style
2001 Wendouree Cab Malbec.
Youthful colour and also youthful palate. Lots of minty eucalyptus notes with iron earth and dark fruits. Still quite structured but tannins starting to release the fruit somewhat. Impressive and complex but needs more time
Had a hundred acres wraith ‘19 this afternoon. Was pretty surprised by it. Herbal/fruit forward nose. Wouldn’t say the nose was super exuberant. Smooth and balanced red fruited palate. It was ultimately a good but not memorable wine. While it was outside of the in your face Napa I expected it was also not something that I would search out. Surprising experience.
Would love your notes on the wines.
This is such a wonderful wine. Dense and powerful with a resonant finish that goes on and on; explodes with tangerine flavors, smoky and salty mineral character, spice, and subtle nuance. It does so with such a paradoxical light touch, and achieves an astonishing level of grace and elegance, considering its relative adiposity. Lots of textural interest. The case of this I just purchased is not long for this world.
