What bottle of wine did you open today? (Part 2)

Thanks for the note. I have a couple of these and was wondering about them, as I haven’t opened any 14s yet. I have a great friend visiting from out of town who is a new world Pinot Noir fan and I might open a bottle of the Porets with him to see what he thinks.

Last time I had this bottle was about a year and this time it was much more open. Showing lots of sweet red-cherry fruit and spice. Perfect match with roast chicken.

Nice, how was it?

Occasionally, the skies open up, the sun shines down and you sip a wake-up call wine. For me it was Clos St. Jacques. Knocked me out.

  • 2018 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques Vieille Vigne - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru (12/17/2023)
Ok, bear with me...Nose of shellfish/oyster shells, scallops, a touch of tidal funk...whaaa?!? Resolving into dried apples and again...oysters somehow and yet... not bad?

Palate of intense savory black fruit, cherry and brambles/stems, med+ tannins and med+ acid plus reduction/gunflint. 13.5% Alc.

My notes don't do this justice but it was a remarkable, complex and delicious step up from the also-tasty Moines. A wow wine with upside potential given time, and this from a ripe, let us say "lesser" vintage.

Someone just moved my cheese...So THIS is what Clos St. Jacques can be. (94 points)

Nice! I usually by 2 of these a year, but I have a bunch of 19s. I think I’m gonna send it and open one early next year. Still never tried a Fourrier CSJ.

I have been mostly underwhelmed by 2011 red burgs. I bought quite a lot to maintain allocations and generally they have not met expectations. Ok but lean and mostly tart red fruited and angular. But this is flat out delicious esp given it is a village wine. One of the nicest 2011s I have had in the last couple of years

It was my first Fourrier CSJ; I tried it in the name of science and it was my WOTY. Except for a few producers, I went easy on buying the 18’ vintage- generally too big, even for me. But this one hit a sweet spot. Have sampled a lot of Fourrier this year so it felt special to uncork te top domaine cuvee.

Looking forward to your notes on the 19.

I skipped 18 for the most part as well, although looking at notes from some critics it seems like Fourrier’s CSJ was one of the standouts of the vintage. Glad it showed well. Cheers!

Poached pear and apple compote with a bit of nutmeg. Salinity and lemon cream
Excellent.

Great tasting! That vertical must have been a trip.

How was that 2005 Bedel drinking?

The Bedel was drinking well, surprised that it was still quite fresh and bright at this age (base vintage was 2005). There were some interesting notes of spearmint and cheese on the nose but these were quite subtle, it was mainly pears, apples and lemon. On the palate it had some weight and density but the finish was a bit short. Complexity was just OK or it maybe suffered due to it being drunk with the Selosse.

Pretty simple Trousseau. The nose gives strawberry, white pepper, and the tiniest amount of brett. The palate offers rhubarb, red berries and a tiny hint of anis. The class pours with a very gentle amount of residual gas which blows away an hour in. It’s a very joyful bottle from a producer who I really like.

2018, François Raveneau, Chablis 1er Cru, Forêt

This had that limestone bench quality and the layer upon layers upon layers of citrus fruit that you get with Raveneau. On the nose it showed less of that classic tidal pool iodine and displayed more tropical fruits, but maintained a masterful use of reduction. This was a ripe, but wonderfully complex Chablis. Not pictured was an awesome 2018 Bruno Clair Corton-Charlemagne that was round, voluptuous, all encompassing, and pillowy. Tasting the two next to each other was a great reminder that despite the hot vintage, terroir is still king.

Opened an 06’ Clos Apalta last night. This wine was not tight but was definitely not open for business after pulling the cork. Poured a small glass and slow ox’d for 2-3 hours. Had a glass after dinner and the wine got better in the glass. Full secondary tasting notes but very aromatic with excellent structure. Hard for me to definitively pull out the individual tasting characteristics but if you have a bottle of this sitting around I think its in a good window before going tertiary.
