What bottle of wine did you open today? (Part 2)

Yup needs more time to develop more complexity and lose some baby fat

'82 Magdelaine is so consistently good.

Brace is a collective noun eg a brace of pheasants…possibly Olde English. Probably not that commonly used these days.
It would be more Aussie to say “shit hot trifecta”’

As someone who enjoys pheasants, I would say the word is alive and kicking.

Thanks for sharing and an interesting tasting having them all side by side. Not always an easy call but quite often the famous resurrection, or perhaps the curious case of Benjamin Button takes place.

A brace is a pair, some would say it means a male and a female.

Yes, excellent wines, particularly single vinyeard Ribeira Sacras.

Was thinking a brace had some local colloquialism to it in Oz, that meant 3 vs. 2, as I have always heard it to mean two or a pair, ie. scored a brace is two goals for instance as an EPL nut.

The word ‘brace’ has roots in the Old English language, and a brace can also signify a ‘pair’ of something that was killed or shot down. It also goes further to the Anglo-French language, where it meant a ‘pair of arms’.

“Braces” are also what I use to keep my suit pants up. Weird that the word sounds plural . . . however it’s referring to only one pair of straps . . . .

brace | brās |
noun
1 a device fitted to something, in particular a weak or injured part of the body, to give support: a neck brace.
• a strengthening piece of iron or timber used in building or carpentry.
• (also braces) a wire device fitted in the mouth to straighten the teeth.
• a tool in carpentry having a crank handle and a socket to hold a bit for boring.
• a rope leading aft from each yardarm, used for trimming the sail.
2 (braces) British English a pair of straps that pass over the shoulders and fasten to the waistband of a pair of trousers or a skirt at the front and back to hold it up; suspenders.
3 (plural brace) a pair of something, typically of birds or mammals killed in hunting: thirty brace of grouse.
4 Printing either of the two marks { and }, used either to indicate that two or more items on one side have the same relationship as each other to the single item to which the other side points, or in pairs to show that words between them are connected.
• Music the mark {, used to join staves that are to be performed at the same time.

Cool side project started by Jason Lett around ‘02 when he wasn’t getting along with pops. This 2016 is 100% Roland Green, whole cluster, and he only made a single demi muid.

  • 2012 Von Schubert Maximin GrĂźnhäuser Abtsberg Riesling Kabinett - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (21/10/2023)
Cork closure (bought two, the other bottle I received was screwcap). Opened a couple hours ahead of dinner since the previous notes mentioned reductiveness but no sign of it here. So vibrant for an 11 year old wine, but with some secondary development and complexity. Steely citrus fruit complemented with an appealing, lush mouthfeel. Seamless and integrated, this is drinking superbly now. Haven’t opened a Riesling for a while and always wonder why I don’t open more when I finish a bottle. (93 pts.)
  • 1995 Château LabĂŠgorce - France, Bordeaux, MĂŠdoc, Margaux (20/10/2023)
Still sprightly for its age even though the soy and forest floor notes dominated. Tertiary but alive red fruit, a wonderful classic Bordeaux that I obtained for a song. (91 pts.)
  • NV Corbon Champagne Absolument Brut - France, Champagne (20/10/2023)
Zero dosage but not too strict. High acid with lean citrus fruit, yet powerful at the same time. Better with food. (91 pts.)

We had some good friends over today. Buddy brought some bubbles:

NV Perrier-Jouet Grand Brut
I got a single small serving of this. Weirdly enough, with all the Champagne I drink this rarely crosses my path: good, mineral, decent acidity, fresh, fun.

Domaine de Bonserine CĂ´te Brune 1998
Cork looked perfect but it disintegrated when trying to pull it out. A long team tackle of ah-so and waiter’s corkscrew saved the day. This was so tight initially that there was no way we were going to start with it. Move on and revisit.

2020 Dubost CĂ´te de Py
4th bottle of this and seriously this is insane. I’m buying all my buddy has left of this. Soooo good.

Marrenon Luberon Gardarèm 2019
Apparently, this won best Syrah in the world at some point . Smells like a Côte du Rhône tastes like a Côte du Rhône. 15.5% and it shows. I didn’t like it. The alcohol shows. It’s the only bottle we didn’t go through.

Revisit the Bonserine: Bordeaux nose! Seriously, it’s leather, cigar box, slate and cassis! Could have fooled me. The Syrah shows on the palate with bright red berries, hints of smokey meat and a ferruginous note. Nice not great but very much alive.

Chandon de Briailles Savigny-Les-Beaune 1er Cru Aux Fournaux 2017
Very nice. It’s not quite the Iles-de-Vergelesses but it’s still a very nice bottle and quite open right now: red and black berries, some earthy tones and slight oak spices. The palate shows good concentration, lovely acidity on bright red berries and sweet spices on the finish.

Domaine Arlaud Morey St-Denis 1er Cru Les Ruchots 2014
Nice! Red berries, sweet spices and some tangy citrus notes. No hollow point on this, it follows through from front to finish with plenty of fruit, acidity and fine tannins. Long finish. Lovely.

2006 Jamet Cote Brune. Damn this is good. Savoury complex nose with tapenade, wild thyme and a bit of smoke. Layers of bright dark fruits, more savoury spicy notes. Silky fine tannins and beautiful acidity. This was the complete package and a joy to drink.

The ‘03 Sociando was past its prime. Some nice tertiary flavors, but thin and lacking much interest.

The ‘10 Ludes was great. Tons of acid that balanced the sweetness. This can age for decades.

‘05 Arcadian is the WOT(Weekend). Drinking perfect but the cork didn’t make it out. Thank god Joe is making more of these.

Totally appropriate for what it is at this point in its evolution. Solid, solid Burgundy that popped with duck confit at home. '96 acid is in effect here.

@brodie_thomson,

Other than not performing to the level of a great '98 Pomerol, how is the '98 VT holding up in general? I don’t own much CdP anymore, but have several '98 VT’s including a magnum. It’s been 3 years since I opened one (a 750), and it was still showing quite well.

Cheers,
Warren

I almost never do this type of side-by-side comparison at home, but opened two bottlings from Max Kilburg at once the other night. I’m on night four of this “study” and really happy I’ve done it. Painfully young on the first night (super funky nose that took a while to blow off) but these have been shape-shifting for the better ever since. Supreme elegance and a nice demonstration of the difference sites. Youth aside, this is my preferred style of Kabinett.

I don’t have a strong preference but the Ohligsberg gets the edge for my preferences, wife has leaned towards the bigger, more robust Goldtropfchen. Will let the rest of my bottles rest for a long while and double down on these wines in the years to come.

The 98 VT was fully mature and very pretty with a lot of red fruits and some spice notes. I would be drinking them up if it were me.

Brodie,
I opened one tonight with my daughter (her birth year) and her friends. This particular bottle was quite alive and youthful.

  • 1998 Domaine du Vieux TĂŠlĂŠgraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Crau

Surprisingly fresh at 25. Beautiful fruit dominates the tertiary aromas and flavors. Cherry and grenadine, with licorice and spice notes. I haven’t opened a CdP in 3 years, but this bottle brought me back to a former love of Southern Rhone wines.
