What bottle of wine did you open today? (Part 2)

Last night at Le Bon Georges

Jacques Puffeney Arbois Vin Jaune 2011
Stunning. Classic and powerful nose of walnuts, red apple, coffee, caramel and oxidative overtones. The palate is so incredibly balanced. I thought the oxidative flavors would take over but no, it’s balanced, fresh and complex. There’s plenty of fruit and the acidity is not shrill it just offers the perfect medium to carry the fruit, spices, walnut and other flavors to a long persistent finish. One of the best vin jaune I’ve had.

I shared this bottle with a friend who had never tried vin jaune (or sous voile wine for that matter) and he was floored by it.

Armand Heitz Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Murgers des Dents de Chien 2019
A nose of crisp fresh red cherry, stems and spices. Bright palate which is initially all cherry but it gained volume and complexity as it got some air. I’m pretty sure this has a lot of stems in as I got those herbal notes I associate to whole cluster. It works on this wine as it adds freshness and depth. Nice finish on chalky minerality. A good young wine and I’d love to try it again in with some age but it’s drinking beautifully right now

Henri Giraud Ratafia de Champagne Solera 90-16
Solera started in 1990 (and I assume ending in 2016). Raisins, fresh grapes, dried figs, candied orange and a hint of cacao. Beautiful palate and the sweetness is not sticking out. Well done.

Etter Poire Williams
Ripe pear on the nose. Smooth with just a small kick in the throat as it goes down.

Beautiful dinner in Paris.
