What bottle of wine did you open today? (Part 1)

I am down to a singleton of the 1997 CdL-Beaulieu and a pair of the 2002 QdC. Either of y’all have either lately?

Nope.

2020 Colli di Lapio Fiano di Avellino
I am sipping a small glass from a test drive bottle before dinner. The profile changes slightly with each vintage, but I am a fan boy of almost every vintage. This one leads with more energetic and riper fruit than ‘typical’, but still carries ample minerality, maybe a bit subdued acidity, and a long lingering aftertaste of tangy spice and something reminiscent of pine nuts. Very enjoyable wine.

So far:

2014 Billaud Montee de Tonnerre Super

NV Egly Rose’ Always great

2010 Chevillon Les Perrieres Drinking well

2019 Matrot Volnay Santenots

Delicious!

Nice day at the lake to enjoy a little wine. This 2012 Leonetti cab was pretty nice, but I have a preference for the 2013.

I’m sorry I can’t be of much help. My last note on the Beaulieu Les Rouannières is from 2016 and on the Beaulieu L’Anclaie is from 2014, both of which are in CT. I haven’t had any of the 2002s.

12’ Stags Leap Chase Creek, lots of dark cherry notes. Still primary but moving towards secondary. Took about an hour in the glass to fully open up.
09’ Pine Ridge Howell Mountain, decanted for 2 hours. This is at peak primary. Very dense fruit, typical Howell mountain. Very tasty.

This, from a 375.

So enjoyable.

2019 Drew Field Blend GSM
85% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre, 5% Grenache, 5% Viognier
1st two impressions, I love almost everything about this wine, though I’ve read 50% and 100% whole cluster for this vintage (I can’t find anything on their website to confirm). Regardless, for as lean as the wine is, the amount of tannin adds enough oomph to throw it off a bit, at least right now. I think it’ll be great a few more years. Worth the price and I’ll buy another (or two) to lay down for a few years.

Yep, I had the 18 St. Joe at dinner a couple months ago and thought it was fabulous. No overripe notes or monochromatic character. I’ve learned not to paint a vintage with too broad a brush, but was especially wowed with the smoky complexity here given its relative youth and other 18s that have underperformed.

2019 AXR V Madone Cabernet

Last night at a work dinner:

'08 Bizot Haut Cotes de Nuits Blanc – $160 off a restaurant list in Fort Worth so I had to order it. In today’s insanity, more recent vintages of this show up on Wine-Searcher for about $2,500-3,000/btl. I guess only about 500 btls made and this isn’t even on CT. How was it? Quite lovely, as it turns out. In a nice place on its aging curve, more serious than the appellation would suggest, and shows really nice concentration and depth. But it’s probably not much more than a $150 wine at best.

'10 Rostaing Cote Rotie ‘La Landonne’ – I’m not historically a huge Rostaing fan but I love '10 N Rhone and the price was right. And man, this is a terrific wine. It’s super duper young and needs a ton of time, but the raw material and balance are on point, with dusty red fruit, serious midapalate intensity, and fine structure. Give it a decade and it’ll be really great.

With dinner on Friday:

2019 Petit Clocher Anjou Blanc.
The latest vintage of a personal favorite. A modest Chenin Blanc that usually delivers for me. Usually. This vintage is different, with subdued fruit, and minimal oak which is quite a contrast to the 2018 which I thought was very good. https://www.wineberserkers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=3050401#p3050401
There is a lot of energy here in the 2019 as usual, acid and mineral, but not the fruit to complete my expected package. In many ways it reminds me of the 2019 Huet Vouvray ‘Le Haut Lieu’ Sec that I tasted not long ago. https://www.wineberserkers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=3526532#p3526532 I also found that wine less immediately appealing. But the Huet is generally highly regarded by others, and this 2019 Anjou Blanc may be better than my wine appreciation level gives it credit for. Pricewise, It certainly is an attractive wine to give a try at about 1/3 to 1/2 the price of the Huet.

p.s. Todd, I am available for photo consults.
