I enjoyed it, but unfortunately I didn’t really spend too much time on it. The wife needed a red pronto, so it didn’t get a lot of air and I was at the short end of this bottle. For some reason I expected it to be more full-bodied than it was. It was a bit tannic at first too, but again it was a pop-and-pour.
Hi Truett - This was my last of three, and by far the best. I had $30 in CT as cost, but I think that was a swag to include tax and/or shipping. Bottle age has tamed this a bit, and definitely a red-fruited syrah. It had a bit of a cherry Swee-Tart finish to it, in a pleasing way.
2011 Westerhold Bennett Valley Pinot Noir. Russell Bevan wine maker. 14.2 ABV. This is the second time we’ve tried it and it is starting to flesh out and strut some stuff. Looks like a Syrah in the glass, but all Pinot on the palate. Who’d a thunk Russell was good at Pinot.
White - 2012 Poggiobello Colli Orientali del Friuli Friulano. Not really familiar with Friuli but this wine is just really tasty with peach and green apple with piercing acid running through the middle and a nice drying finish that is almost sweet.
Red - 2009 Pine Ridge Cave 7 Cab - lovely cab if a bit young. Bright fruits and a very pleasant mouthfeel with a wonderful lingering finish. Will improve with age…can’t wait to try again on day 2.
Virna Barolo Riserva, 03; not a superstar, but drinking quite nicely right now: good mixture of tannins and tar, balanced by cacao and sweet darkfruits. The fresh porcini risotto we had with it (instead of the white truffle, which we could not find another couple here to go in for at $200 an ounce) brought a hint of mushroom as well.
