Thanks Howard, I would love to revisit all three side by side to see how they show in that format. Regardless, these newly styled seasonals are very encouraging in the direction MT is taking. I was In San Diego today and really wanted to drop in the brewery but only managed to get over to Society. Like you, I really like this current batch of Booming Rollers, enjoying one now as a matter of fact.
I agree with you. At one point years ago this was a beer we hunted down when it was released. To many bad bottles since then, I gave up, to many other really good beers for my $$$$
Heater Allen Pils - drank 5 of 6 bottles I bought at the brewery less than 2 weeks ago. Need to grab more when I’m in PDX at the end of the month.
de Garde Saison Melange - Blended wild farmhouse ale aged in oak wine barrels. Slightly tart with nice fruit notes coming from the wine barrels. After feeling ambivalent about the only two de Garde beers I’d had to date - Petit Desay and Saison Premiere - this beer has me beginning to understand the de Garde hype.
de Garde Tres Grand Blanc - Golden rye wild ale aged in oak with Riesling grapes & dry hopped. This beer made me a de Garde believer. Absolutely stunning beer! Everything that the Saison Melange possessed, but amplified. The Riesling grapes stood out and made this a bright wild ale. Wish I had many more!
Thanks again to Rick for hooking me up with the de Garde bottles.
Funny story. I’m in my regular beer drinking spot, order a Boneyard Notorious. Bartender hands me a tulip glass, amber beer. Had a sip, look at her and said “this isn’t Boneyard Notorious. It’s an IPA, but it isn’t Boneyard. And it’s not Notorious ” She went into the back and noticed she had switched two of the taps. Total beer nerd moment, but I was proud.
Beachwood Brewing Co. Citraholic IPA 7.1% ABV. Seasonal Release. Hopped and massively dry hopped with Citra. Warrior, Columbus and Simcoe hops included in different measures
I didn’t care much for the last batch of Citraholic last summer, I thought it had diacetyl issues. Other than that, this has always been one of my favorite beers Julian makes. It also is almost to a fault, always over hyped as the end all of Citra centric beers being crafted today. As many know I have been quite unabashed in my love and support for my local brewery who I have watched grow from a tiny BBQ joint on Main St. in Seal Beach to one of the most respected breweries in the world and for good reason. That being said, I have always thought that Julians Citraholic wasn’t as great as it could/should be, don’t get me wrong, there have been some amazing batches but what I saw and tasted was an inconsistency within the recipe.Lately I have been hearing and reading reviews on this current release as being the best Citraholic to date, so taking that with a grain of salt I picked up a couple bottles earlier this week to taste for myself.
This batch pours a beautiful sunset orange with a thin white wispy cap that dissipates rather quickly. The perfume that comes off this batch is simply amazing, a rich heady mix of over ripe tropical and citrus fruits. The flavor profile shows more of the same with gobs of rich racy tropical fruit notes framed by just enough dry crackery malts to allow the hops to shine through. The layering of flavors, from the initial pop of bitterness, to the long citrus driven finish, is fantastic.
This is the beer that I knew and hoped Julian could squeeze out of the Citra hop. I am comfortable putting this batch up with some of the best Citra beers available, such as Nobles Citra Showers, and Kern River’s Citra to name but a few. This batch actually could be better than them all.
Same thing happened to me recently. Ordered a Goose Island IPA at BW3. what came back was, I swear, a lager. only difference in my story from yours is that the bartender in my story continued to insist that I had the correct beer in my glass.
I tried Southern Tier Mokah on nitro a few nights ago and wow! Off the charts delicious with chocolate milk shake and espresso flavors delivered in a creamy, smooth 11% stout. Fantastic.
