What BEER are you drinking? (Part 1)

Fulton “Worthy Adversary” Russian Imperial Stout. Hitting the spot after shoveling snow. And I thought beer tasted best after mowing the lawn.

It is something with the California ABC, here is one section of the law…

  1. All beer sold in this State shall have a label affixed to the package or container thereof, upon which shall appear the true and correct name and address of the manufacturer of the beer, and also the true and correct name of the bottler of the beer if other than the manufacturer. No manufacturer, importer, or wholesaler of beer shall use a container or carton as a package or container of a beer other than such beer as is manufactured by the manufacturer whose name or brand of beer appears upon the container or carton, or use as a package or container of a beer a container or carton which bears the name of a manufacturer of beer or the brand of any beer other than those of the manufacturer of the beer contained in the container or carton.

There is another section (25204?) about the alcohol percentage, I think if it is over a certain % the growler is suppose to be labeled with its alcohol %.

I would guess there is also some federal regulations with the ATF as well but who knows. I am guessing some breweries may just overlook some of these rules because who is going to enforce them while others are extra careful or have lawyers watching their back.

The California growler laws suck. Along with what Dustin posted you can only have growlers filled by the brewer so no growler fills at bars/pubs.

Interesting. Thanks for that, Dustin.

In Oregon we don’t have any weird rules either. Bring a growler from anywhere (or a generic, unlabeled one) and they’ll fill it. Works at most brewpubs, bottle shops with taps, etc. Also, 1 quart bombers are becoming big as well so you can get a 2qt or 1qt fill. But then again this IS Beervana, so I wouldn’t expect less.

+1 for Washington.

Those of you who have not been to the PNW yet, need to make a plan to do so. Whether it’s PDX, SEA, or Bend, we will blow your expectations out of the water. Just sayin’.

Tom, I agree, the great PNW is a fantastic region for world class craft. In my opinion Caldera makes one of the best canned IPA’s on the market and there are dozens of great breweries popping up everywhere from Portland to Seattle.

On the growler issue, for as craft centric as California is, our current growler laws are absurd, plus my wife is growing tired with the accumulation of " those ugly beer jugs " taking up precious space in our wine cellar.

Will Alpine reuse growlers, Bud?

Yes, they will re- fill Alpine growlers, its not the re-use issue in California, all Breweries will re-fill their own growlers. I just cant take an Alpine growler to Beachwood and have them fill it with Beachwood product.

2012 Goose Island Sophie: Pretty delicious. Reminds me a lot of the Pranqster, but perhaps a bit better. More complexity I suppose. If only they made it in 12oz bottles . . .

Rogue Hazelnut Brown Nectar: Wonderful. Reminds me of the Sam Smith’s Nut Brown, but definitely better. Can’t remember who recommended this, but awesome rec. If only they made it in 12oz bottles . . .

Ummmm… scroll down a bit here.

I looked at the link and the only size I could find was a 650mL. The bottle I think you’re referring too certainly looks like a 12oz bottle, but at least the one I purchased was 650mL.

Perhaps I’m missing something.

Goose Island does make 4-paks of 12 oz. Sophie.

Hangar 24 Vinaceous

Really interesting brew, saw this and was intrigued by the concept so grabbed a bottle. A brown ale brewed with fresh crushed Mourvèdre grapes (from Temecula) then aged on French Oak (chips?).

Quite nice, you can tell this is a brown ale with some fruit component as there is ripe jammy fruit on the nose. The fruit is more juicy on the palate and matches well with the brown ale character. A solid brew on its own but I can’t help but think this would be a brilliant base for a sour. A little barrel age with some funkies would add some nice refreshment and character as the beer is a bit sweet as is. Still quite good as I dig the winey character.

Just got two super fresh four packs in a trade. This is insanely delicious and lives up to all it’s much deserved hype, currently the highest rated beer in the world on BA , overtaking PtY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Got some Bruery - Tart of Darkness disappearing beside me right now. Proper TN forthcoming. Good stuff.

Drinking more Weihenstephen Korbinian Doppelbock. I love this stuff, and it’s strangely good with tacos. The malt sweetness cuts the heat. Also trying the recently kegged homebrewed Old Ale.

The Old Ale is pretty remarkable actually.

How was the Risgoop?

I tried a 10 Barrel Rye’M or Treason Imperial Rye Ale a couple of nights ago. Interesting texture, nice rye flavor, hid its 10.3% ABV pretty well. A little bitter in the finish.
