I’ve had the 2021 vintage and really enjoyed it. At sub $20 this is a crazy good QPR
I’m sure this topic has probably been addressed somewhere in the murky archives, but are any of the Appellation Trading Company wines that are forever (and seemingly only ever) sold at a huge discount any good? I’m not interested in buying any, I’m just curious, because they seem to be about 90% of all of the heavily discounted wines on Vivno, and they pop up on other discount sites as well. Frisson, Erikson & Caradin, Lortum Richie, Dolum, On Q, etc.
I’ve had an Erickson & Caradin that was palatable. My guess is the “ATC” wines are very hit or miss, but I haven’t had enough to make a definitive statement.
Some of the heavily discounted wines are quite good, but I don’t think they are ATC.
Examples:
I’ve had the Firefly 2013 Coombsville Cabernet and thoroughly enjoyed it. Other vintages are currently available $20-30
I’ve had the Stuhlmuller 2021 Cabernet and enjoyed it as well. I bought the 2022 at under $20. Currently $23. Awesome QPR
Vivino regularly presents awesome buys, but I wish they had a summer hold policy. They pretty much ship within 1-7 days after an order. Period. No exceptions.
So I did refrain from buying the Shaw. What a dumb mistake .
I had the Delille Four Flags and boy is it delicious. Just a fantastic wine. If you like Washington State Cabs, watch to see if the Four Flags comes on sale again. It’s absolutely fantastic.
I opened a 2017 Madrigal Sonnet #63 last night that I picked up from Vivino on a flash sale for $19.99. This was outstanding - lush fruit, nice tannic backbone, and it softened nicely over the 2 hours it was in the decanter. I would have been happy had I paid $40 - $50, so great value.
Purchases like this validates (for me) keeping Vivino premium at $5/month, checking the website daily, sorting the wines by most discounted, and looking for these flash sales. If I find just one single bottle to purchase a month, that premium membership more than pays for itself.
Yeah i purchased the madrigal sonnet, thoroughly enjoyed it for the price, went back and purchased 3 more when it went down to 20$. Ive been impressed by the offers lately and also the thursday premium special. the membership is well worth it just for a fee purchases even if you don’t buy cases. Gotta keep an eye on prices because they can fluctuate quite a bit week to week.
I strongly considered the Madrigal Sonnet but sadly passed.
I previously bought a case of the Madrigal Petit Sirah. I paid $13.26, after discount, from Vivino. Without considering price, I really enjoyed it. When you consider the QPR, it’s out of this world good.
I believe you’re right in that Petit Sarah is their premiere wine.
The one I bought is white label with a 2019 vintage. Madrigal sold the winery in 2024. Such a shame, because they seem to produce some lower cost wine that is well made.
Mystery bottle appears to be the 2022 Beau Vigne Romeo at $32.99. I haven’t been a Beau Vigne fan but seem to recall positive reviews on the Romeo. Anyone have firsthand experience?
