Trivia Question - Old-Vine Zin Vineyard

I posted this on another thread, but am concerned that it might have been buried…

Trivia Question:

What is the largest contiguous old-growth, own-rooted Zinfandel vineyard in California?*

Evangelho?

Own rooted was the kicker for me. But it’s not all Zin, lots of Mourvèdre and Carignane so maybe not.

Largest? That one is the curveball. Going to guess Monte Rosso.

Own rooted is the one that narrows the field drastically.

Was going to say Evangelho as well. Gotta be!

I would guess that it’s in Lodi.

Morisoli in Napa

Kirschenman?

Bechtold has less zin i think.

St. Georges, where Birichino gets its Zin? Not sure how big it is.

Own rooted is most likely in the Delta, where the sandy “Delhi” soil is phylloxera resistant. Which makes Evangelho a good call. But it’s not the only place…

Does it have to be 75% Zin to qualify?

What exactly does “own-rooted” mean?

As far as phylloxera resistance, wouldn’t Amador county be a possibility?

I realize that Lodi vineyards are usually much larger, but was that the case 75 years ago?

It means the vines were not grafted to a rootstock.

The correct answer has not been given yet.

The size of a few suggested answers:

· Evangelho - 36 acres

· Bechthold - 25 acres (not Zin)

· Besson St Georges - ?? (The entire Besson family’s western parcel of land is 109 acres in size, but vines only occupy a portion, with many newer plantings; it is very unlikely that Zin/Mission vines take up more than ~20 acres)

· Morisoli - 53-acres (is it own-rooted?)

· Kirschemann - 19 acres

Hint: The site is not in Napa, Mendocino, Sonoma, Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, or Santa Cruz Counties.

I don’t know the answer, but since it hasn’t already been said, how about Oakley Road Vineyard in Contra Costa County?

How about the Lopez Vineyard in the Cucamonga Valley?

I’ll take a guess - Pagani Ranch?

Good guess. I drive by Lopez Vineyard all the time when driving to visit my mom and I do not think it is that large.
