Trivia Question - Old-Vine Zin Vineyard

Due to phylloxera, own-rooted means we are talking about sandy soils. This naturally points us either to Contra Costa or Lodi. Since we know Contra Costa doesn’t have a lot of pure zinfandel vineyards, my guess is going to be in Lodi. I would have to sat either the Lizzy James Vineyard or St. Amant Vineyard.

I don’t think Bechtold has any Zinfandel in it. I am pretty sure it is only Cinsault, but I may be mistaken.

Lopez is own rooted, in sandy soils. It’s pretty big, but it has a lot of other stuff in it like Palomino, Mission and Grenache.

My guess is Lopez too. It’s not a contiguous 300 acres but I can’t think of any other own-rooted “vineyard” even close to that size.

Marian’s Vineyard Lodi?

Nope, it succumbed to phylloxera and was replanted on a resistant rootstock. Besides Drew already said it wasn’t in Sonoma County

Drew said it’s not in Sonoma.

And Drew said the vineyard is not in Sonoma.

Hint:
The vineyard is not in Temecula or San Bernardino Counties.

Interesting question. I snooped around on google for ideas, no definitive answer, but I guess my best guess should remain not posted, ‘cause I cheated.

I found the information in a book, btw.

Their home ranch sits directly south of the city of Lodi, on a beautiful 225 acre ranch comprised of 9 separate blocks of own-rooted Old Vine Zinfandel dating back to 1901. We source grapes from multiple vineyard blocks planted between 1901 and 1945. All of them are head-trained and planted on their own roots in very sandy soils. In our opinion, these vineyards produce some of California’s best Zinfandel wines, consistently ripening beautiful grapes.

Anyone guess Stampede yet?
