The thread on favorite non-famous wines made me rememeber a 2000 Ch. Marsau I had a couple years ago and really enjoyed for a sub $25 bord. Any experiences with other more recent vintages? Noticed the prices for Marsau have dropped significantly since 2000.
a friend opened up the 05 with me last year, I thought it was extremely international and didn’t really taste like bordeaux:
-
2005 Château Marsau - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Côtes de Francs (2/1/2009)
SuperBowl Night (Chicago IL, Mike’s house): nose: nice and filling nose that is very ripe for bordeaux with berries, red cherries, some red licorice, and a bit of anise to top it off. Its nice and aromatic, and while not in your face ripe, it doesn’t really evoke bordeaux
taste: good medium feel with medium tannins providing tones of red licorice, a lot of mixed berries, and red cherries. Again, it doesn’t taste or fully feel like a bordeaux, which is a bit bothersome
overall: an international styled wine. It doesn’t really say bordeaux in that many ways to me, and while very good, it has little sense of place. A good wine for the price, but I’ve certainly had other 05 bordeauxs for under 20 that tasted like bordeauxs that were accessible and excellent for the price (87 pts.)

I had another bottle of the 00 tonight - I thought it was drinking great. Fully mature, and it lived far longer than ever expected. Kept in a cold cellar since release, so may not be representative of what is available in the market. But I’m going to be keeping an eye out for good vintages of Marsau going forward now that my stash of 2000’s is just about gone.
I bought a case of the '00. It was $10 pb!! Remember it being a nice drink for the money.
That’s a steal.
That’s what it was going for on futures 15 years ago…no one had heard of it then. I took a flyer on a case for the same $10. I really think it tastes like a good vintage of La Grave a Pomerol. Crazy.
The last couple evenings I’ve been enjoying the 2015 Marsau [Francs Cote de Bordeaux] which has had changes in ownership, AOC nomenclature, and even it’s label over recent times. But the 14.5% abv all merlot wine continues to be good, as I had mentioned in a brisk discussion of ageworthy satellite right banks here. This is a Jeff Leve styled wine, and I mean that in a complimentary way, as I love it too, and it’s one of the few satellites I keep an eye out for. From my perception I get plums and mocha with a resolved texture and soft acidity. Sediment is very light and the cork is natural. I have aged this house in some vintages, but I think ten years is enough for these. For WB’s who like Pomerol, this is worth sampling, if you can find any of the 2000-3000 cases. Easy B+ on my card.
