Sami-Odi Shiraz, Little Wine #9, Barossa Valley. I’ve been wanting to try a Sami-Odi Wine for a while now but they are…‘difficult’ to source here in the States/AZ. I was finally able to snag a few for (relatively) decent prices and was excited to open one. Even with really high expectations, I am happy to report that the wine more than exceeded them. A big wine for sure but you’d never know it. It first hits your palate with an explosion of black fruits, cinnamon, and olive to the point where you fully expect it to be a huge, heavy wine…but somehow it hits your mid-palate with a rush of acidity and everything feels incredibly balanced, and almost medium bodied. Each sip feels like an adventure and you literally can’t wait to take the next one. A truly exciting wine that I wish I had a bunch of in the cellar. The hype is real.
I’ve been buying directly for five years. Big fan of the wines and of Fraser. With the accolades starting to pile up, the prices will continue to rise (as the wines have only been recently imported here to the US the last year or two).
Nice!! Im super jealous for sure! I looked into buying directly but it sounded like you needed to commit to at least a case. And with the shipping costs, that was a big pill to swallow having never tried the wines. Now im a bit more interested in making the investment
Not sure what the wait list is like, and yes, shipping cost from AUS is pricey (around $275/case, so it adds $20-25 to each bottle), but the all-in bottle price still comes out to a better price than I’m seeing at retail.
I tried to get on the list and I was willing to order a case to ship to the US, but Fraser said he doesn’t ship to the US. This was in 2019 after I brought back 2 bottles from a trip to AU, so I’m lucky to have tried it, and still have 1 bottle remaining.
I believe there is a waiting list now to get on the mailing list - same with Wendouree.
If you look at Fraser’s site, so can see that the photos are in place for the next vintage - I would expect a mailer to be sent in the early new year
I joined when I was living in the Netherlands and it was due to this board I believe (a William Kelly review, although maybe it was the Squires board then (2014)). Shipping was a lot, but I am glad I joined. There are now 3 wines produced and the production looks to be ‘gigantic’ for the next vintage - seems to be about 1100+ cases, so maybe more people will get to experience the love.
If you like the style then there are a couple of new kids on the block. David Powell’s son Callum is making a name for himself with Agricola and a friend of his has released her own wine under the Setiono label. Both release a wine from the Flaxman Valley and their ‘21s are great.
K&L? I was sorely tempted when I saw them pop up, what? about a year ago? But I wound up passing. Thanks for the note, maybe I won’t pass if the opportunity presents itself again.
Been on the Sami Odi wait list for 2 years now. Not sure how long the wait is in front of me. I picked up a few bottles at retail last year and have them tucked away.
I have a similar situation with Standish, it is cheaper to buy off the list and ship direct from Oz even with sky high shipping than it is to find in the US and pay retail + tax and shipping.
I just checked my old emails and it looks like Fraser did add me to the waiting list about a year and a half ago. Hopefully we’ll get an offer sooner than later
Numbers of wines are roughly (lw is typical 6.5k HD is 4-6.5k) similar bar the newish Home block release (600-1.2k) . All numbers in this post are bottles not cases.
Don’t sleep on Cameron’s other recs both very good.
So I went to the Sami Odd website and added my name to the waiting list to see if I can get a shipment to the US. Received an offer email over-night, I can order up to 12 bottles max, with a 6 bottle limit on the 2021 Hoffmann Dallwitz.
A case is $310 to ship to the US. This is exciting and may blow out my 2023 wine budget
Wait…really?? I mean, that’s awesome for you and all…but how could that be? At least a few of us just on this thread have been on the mailing list for ± 2 years??
My guess is that I previously had my name on the mailing list but Fraser wasn’t shipping to the US. Do you want to split the case? I was going to order 6 of the Hoffmann Dallwitz $75/btl, and 6 of the Little Wine #12 $55/btl plus $310 for US shipping, and he doesn’t ship until April 3. Shipping & customs takes 2 to 4 weeks, so end of April at my door. I live in Massachusetts so it’s still mild temps in April, even chances of snow, or do you want fewer than 6 bottles?
