Fantastic event. Thanks to everyone who came through. Very happy that the weather cooperated.
As I mentioned in the post: NYC: Rose bash: May 3rd - Event Planner - Online or Offline - WineBerserkers, we do a big rose bash every year. This was the most fun yet!
A true over-abundance of roses (over 50). Shockingly, my notes are not the most complete as the hosting and later bacchanalia got in the way, but I’ve put some below and hope that others add in this thread for posterity.
Thanks @phil.lukeman for taking great photos!
-----wines------
'18 Andremily Rose - Very strange experience. Can’t tell if this needs 5 years or if will be too flabby by then. Won’t say I liked it, as found it too brutish, but was an interesting experience. Color is wild. So red, with orange notes. The heft of it. Different type of weight than a bigger “rose” like cht. Simone or Tempier. Herbal notes. Not balanced.
'20 Tempier Rose (Mag) - credit to @Joseph_Grassa for introducing me to this fantastic bottling. As much as I love this year, this bottle did not show as well as the last one. Had another a couple days later that was in it’s glory. Very gastro, the celery seed, the fruit, just lovely
'21 Tempier Rose - shy, but good stuffing
'22 Tempier Rose - touch young for me, but classic
'21 and '22 Pascal Cotat Chavignol Rose - both the Cotat’s were let downs for me, sadly. Just too aggressive and one dimensional. Ton of structure here so think it was just a matter of opening too early. Recently got '09 so will have to pop and compare.
2022 Domaine du Bagnol Cassis Rosé - Biased b/c I have visited the domaine in Cassis and it’s stunningly beautiful. This is showing great right now. Saline finish. Strawberry and herbs. acid and texture in balance.
'20 Tercero Mourvèdre Rosé - Best of the 3. Great. Tannins almost completely integrated - little prickle on sides of tongue, but otherwise a smooth textured rose. Riper conditioned fruit. Complex and showed different sides as it saw more air. Thanks @larry_schaffer!
'21 Tercero Mourvèdre Rosé - More alive than '22. Tannins smoothed a bit. Less peach skin more peach. Enjoyable.
'22 Tercero Mourvèdre Rosé - Needs more time. Clearly not a linear S. France rose.
'22 Hofgut Falkenstein Niedermenniger Herrenberg Spätburgunder Rosé trocken - Don’t get it. 3rd time with one of these and they don’t answer. Not aromatically expressive. Simple. Tart.
'23 Bedrock ‘Ode to Lulu’ - sharp, acidic, light. Not a “wow” wine, but at the price point great. I did enjoy this much more with food due to the edge.
'23 Goodfellow Rose - Super Solid. Neither too Provance nor too CA. Fruit and acid in balance with personality on the refreshing side.
Lambert, Patrick 2021 Chinon Rose - tart and simple
Bonnefoy (La Madone) 2022 Cotes du Forez Rosé Gamay sur Volcan - Tight and tart. Serves it’s purpose on a hot day with food, but didn’t love by itself.
Clos du Joncuas 2022 Gigondas Rose - orange color, more medium bodied. Not a huge sense of place.
Jullien, Thomas 2022 Ventoux Sur la Rose - Great! Little funky. Little wild, but good fruit and still fresh. Def my surprise win of the night. Well worth seeking these out. Especially at the price point, which I think was ~$18.
Muller-Ruprecht 2023 Pfalz Pinot Noir Rosé - Good wine. Light bodied with structure, but not a tart. Riper fruit condition.
'22 Clos Cibonne “Tradition” - This was in a good spot. ginger note. Gorgeous color. Fruit coming in. Lots of time ahead of it
'22 Clos Cibonne “Cuvée Spéciale des Vignettes” - My understanding is that cépage and vinification are the same, the vines are just much older. This for me was lights out. In a beautiful spot. Needed some air though. In full discloser, had towards the end of the evening so might have it swapped with the “Tradition.”
'14 Clos Cibonne “Cuvée Spéciale des Vignettes” - This had a super sherry quality to it. Wild. People loved this or made a face. Real treat to have these two side by side. Thanks @Joseph_Grassa
2021 Domaine du Castel Rose du Castel - Best kosher wine I’ve ever had. The Cab Franc in the blend came through beautifully lending a jalapeno note on top of more dominate red fruit merlot bones.
NV Istine, Rosato Vermouth di Radda - Know I had this, but made no note
Domaine Binner Si Rose - same as above
'23 Bodegas Los Bermejos Listan Negro Rosado - Acid. Saline. berry. melon. something savory. Fruit condition less tart more ripe than I remember past vintages.
T. Berkley - We had 3 vintages, I think it was '23, '22, '21? I did not take a note, but remember these were all riper, plush, heavier bodied, seriously made. One was quite strawberry. The rest not so much. Move out the way wine critics, there is a new sherif in town.
2021 Château de Montguéret Rosé d’Anjou - Very pale pink grey color. Banana runt at top of glass. Some strawberry short cake in it. Mouth is simpler. (84)
'21 Clos Beylesse (mag) - Tied for my WOTN. Just phenomenal balance. Ripe melon. Berries. Smooth, but with supporting acidity. Glorious spot. Have ordered more.
2017 Terroir Al Limit Soc. Lda. Priorat Roc d’Aubaga Tied for my WOTN. Rich, unfolding, complex. Aromatically intense: jam and savor, but not heavy or hot. More fruit in the mouth. Moderate + acidity. Long finish. Tragically the last vintage made acording to @Dan_A
At your own party, you’re allowed to break your own rules. Two sparkeling pet nats:
'23 Piggy Pop Pét-Nat and '20 Piggy Pop Pét-Nat (Mag) - these look ridiculous, but honestly were nice. I prefered the younger wine in 750 as the cherry was riper and little less funky, but mags are a good time and glad we had both.
Missing a ton wines/notes, but oh well! Thanks again to everyone. Bacchanal indeed.
