2012 Bedrock Wine Co. Zinfandel Old Vine- USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley (10/10/2013)
I couldn’t resist opening one right off the truck really nice wine and great QPR.
Great balance and complexity - red fruit and acidity initially that
evolves into smokey and spicy elments. A fantastic QPR that is ready to go now or you could wait a couple of years. I don’t know how long these will last, if offered again I will need to reload. (92 pts.)
I get that. I drank my first '11 a few weeks ago and it was so good that I’m having a hard time not opening one each week. I’m hoping I can resist and spread them out a bit. In truth, I should’ve just bought more.
Ha, I saved 3 from my case of '11s. Haven’t picked up my '12s yet but have bought a couple retail and they are both done. Great value in a complex Zinfandel.
Thanks for the note, and the early “taking one for the team”! Probably the first shipment from Bedrock I received that I didn’t pop one immediately after waiving goodbye to the UPS driver. Maybe this weekend…
Inspired by John, the OP, I cracked one of these as well. What follows is not eloquent, or detailed. But…my initial impression of this wine:

Warning - what is about to follow is a very subjective note, devoid of detailed parsing of individual flavor notes. Skip the rest of this note if that’s a problem:)
Pop/pour. My initial impression of this wine - I don’t recall ever having a zinfandel with a more delicately perfumed nose. This is not a Turley bulldozer (which I like) or a Carlisle (which I also like) that is more often than not relatively closed on release. On to the palate, this initially comes across as something I wasn’t expecting. Almost feminine in character. “Lovely” and “gorgeous” are not often words that come as top of mind for me when describing a Zin, but they are the first words that popped into my head. Outstanding integration and balance.
As often happens with these “pop upon delivery” bottles, air doesn’t do this any favors at present. With more air - more tannins, less integration, less balance. And a touch of sharpness on the finish.
Enamored with this wine. But unless a person is going to pop it with 4-5 friends, and crank through it in 10 minutes (or experiment with an extended decant), I’d recommend holding this for a couple of years. Great raw materials, great at the pop, great potential. With a bit of self-discipline, I might be able to check in on this one tomorrow.
My note from a few months ago, lucky enough to grab some leftovers from the barrel tasting picnic at Bedrock vineyard:
2012 Bedrock Wine Co. Zinfandel Old Vine- USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley (7/16/2013)
Barrel sample, leftover from the Bedrock barrel tasting picnic. The picnic was too much of a frenzy to take notes, but I was lucky to get to spend some quiet time with this wine at home with friends. I normally have a difficult time judging barrel samples, but this wine was just gorgeous from the first sip - purple fruits and brambly spice, racy acidity, and finishing with just a kiss of French oak. Perfectly balanced and easy drinking, this is always a great value; 2012 will be a vintage to remember.
So I have a friend at the office who I turned onto Bedrock, and unlike me who drives up to pick up my wine, he had his shipped, and it just arrived. I had to corral the boxes in the receiving department, because he’s out of the office this week. Talk about a dilemma…
My '12 Bedrock Old Vine (and a whole lot more) is taking a leisurely tour of California in a FedEx express coach. (I understand it is currently residing in Ventura). I hope it enjoys the journey. My palate awaits.
You guys are making me glad I went deep on this one. I took a gamble based on a great experience with 2010 but a lousy experience with 2009 :
2009 : I liked the 2010 quite a bit, but this one was too much for me. To copy and paste from someone else : Jammy black fruits, simple palate, ripe. Needs more acid/tannin. Enjoyable as a cocktail wine. I enjoyed it the most on day 4 (under argon) when it had calmed down a little. 86 points.
2010 : This actually tastes like it came from old vines - it has a thorny brambly note to it that is very nice. There is a lot of fruit, and the fruit is a little on the dark side. This impresses with a great amount of character for such a young wine. 93 points
I have one more of the 2009 so we’ll see how that goes.
That was quick!
Mine arrived at home today but I’m out of town until tomorrow afternoon. 24 hours should be enough time to recover from travel shock, right?
