“The 2004 vintage was defined by the dry heat experienced in the region over the final weeks before harvest, contributing to wonderful ripeness in the grapes. According to Richard Geoffroy (Chef de Cave) ”growing and fruit ripening periods went by smoothly, with no difficulties – a phenomenon that we have rarely, if ever, seen before”.
The wine is a blend of 53% Pinot Noir and 47% Chardonnay. Yields in 2004, a vintage with excellent growing conditions, were an average 10-11,000kg per hectare, compared to 3-4000kg/ha in 2003.”
Like 1001 night…or standing in a spice-shop in Casablanca or Tanger. Impressive elegant, sexy&hedonistic, firm&racy with a deep mineral core and an oriental touch. Much better than 2003 and totally different.
BIG cellar potential. Hard to resist but give some bottles 10-20 years to age.
Strong BUY recommendation. Quite surprising, as I am not the typical Dom Pérignon-drinker.
The WSPro lowest (to Cali) of $149 is quite absurd. The 2002 was widely available in the 120s a year ago. Surely history will repeat in a few months as inventories build up.
I know LVMH/Moet have been trying to gradually increase the price of this wine over the past couple of vintages. Wholesale cost has gone up a bit here in MA. With the high yields in '04 and high overall production of this wine in general, I’ll be interested to see if they can sustain those increases in the US with this release. Obviously the PC offer is grey market, so I’m more wondering what will happen with the big national and internet retailers.
$99bt is a considerable % below the cost direct from LVMH in the UK at least. Such is the current vogue for Champagne, I’d say the 2004 has arguably sold quicker than the 02.
While they need to be careful, I think they can squeeze the price a little more yet. The distribution of DP is just so good and it doesn’t really have a comparably available peer to provide competition.
PC just email blasted a special June 2Day sale about 15 minutes ago with the 2004 DP listed at $99 again.
However, I clicked over almost the instant I got the email and it was already sold out. Again.
