Thanks, Jim! Yea, pops has had a long, fun and colorful life. As has my mom. And they both remain very vibrant at 84, love to go out and socialize. We get to dinner with them pretty regularly at the beach, and I always come away with it saying, wow I heard another really great story that I had never heard before. They are both very rich storytellers.
Great data points. I have a lot of 2013 Jamet but have not popped any. While I have alot of other vintages of Juge, I was only able to score one bottle of 2013, so I’m holding on to it for the optimal window.
I’ve popped a lot of really good wine with Nick over the holidays, including Thanksgiving, and probably his least favorite was Burgundy. When I say least favorite, however, he still thought it was very good. It was a 2012 Pavelot. I must profess surprise to his taking a liking to classic Cab Franc.
The 2013 Reynard I had earlier in the year was quite grumpy, as was the 2013 Cuchet Beliando. I lamented opening both of them. I am even sitting longer on the 2013 Gonon. For me, if one must touch any Northern Rhones in this timeframe, I would always opt for 2014 or 2011.
Great post ! My son is mid 20’s (also) and has really gotten into wine. His favorites are Bordeaux (he still talks about a random 83 Talbot we shared) and N Rhone (I hold bottles for when he comes to town… I have an 89 Chave standing up for this coming holiday time). He has started buying his own wine and “dropping” it off for me to store in my over-stocked cellar. My dad passed, but he was a scotch guy (didn’t do wine)… I still toast him with his favorites (Lagavulin 16 and Johnie Waker black in particular).
Just ordered some ‘17 Cuchet for my son. He’s 7 1/2
And I’m 60 1/2 based on your notes and experience with your son. My boy is adopted which partly explains the big age gap for a dad. God willing I get to open it with him years on from now.
