The Prodigal Son has a Yak Palate, Loves Baudry and Magdelaine! [2019 Des Tours added]

No doubt.

Love how life comes full circle. This is basically me and my dad when I came out of law school, same thing. And now it is the three of us “Alfert Men” enjoying wines together, like we did over Thanksgiving and will at Xmas. Plus some aged Scotch. It really is special.

Love that my wife even partook. I think she felt left out. But after a few sips of Neal Mollen’s least favorite red grape, and with a few facial expressions, she reverted back to her exalted NZ Sav Blanc, I think from the September 21, 2023 vintage.

Would like to see how Nick responds to the Cordier funk :love_you_gesture:

You can’t handle the funk!

We’ve done the Cordier! Thanksgiving. This 1983 was flat out gorgeous.

Damn… We should have done this with my 83 talbot!:frowning::weary:

I threw the kid a ringer. And he passed the test. We may have a young AFWE on our hands. Or just likes alcohol. Gosh this baby Rayas is so gorgeous. The imprimatur is so noticeable.

Well done with your son. now he can help you drink all the expensive aged goodies.

I have two sons and neither are into wine so must admit to a touch of jealousy……

It won’t be long Robert when your taste buds are so old that the only thing you will like or can taste is Ovid. So save some of the good stuff for your son when he takes over your cellar

I once thought that, as I watched the aging palate of my father, and then like a cat with 9 lives, he’s back to classic stuff. At 85 yo, total classic palate. And adores very mature whiskies! I’ll be dead before then, but it’s a lovely thought!

He hasn’t even introduced himself to Burgundy.

I see a hostile takeover of Robert’s wine cellar.

Another yak palate born. Welcome!

I still have PTSD from those last Des Tours we bought.

WineBid spoilage!

Looks like y’all having a blast. Nock, and the Doggos!!! Btw the 2011 Magdelaine is so good. Well described by you as well. Perceptions of a minty lake shore, red and black cherry fruit, dog fennel, earth, and a bit o savory. An Alfert wine to be sure. And one I love as well.

Great posts, Robert. Love the photo of your son and your dad. (I can sense from your dad’s look that he has seen stuff and is content - :wine_glass: to him!)

agree, a joy to see and read. Thanks for sharing all this. One of the fabulous byproducts of my nephew becoming a chef is that he is now very interested in wine. My dad has always liked wine, but Gabriel brings the nuance of thinking of it in terms of how a chef thinks of aromas and flavours. Needless to say, I am doing my best to corrupt—I mean, expand—his palate and wine experience.

He is either brainwashed or has a killer palate. And since we are on opposite sides of the political spectrum, I can only assume it is the latter.

And at least he asked…

He’s at the beach with my wife and the four dogs, while I’m left working up in Orlando, but coming home to a wonderfully quiet home and a really outstanding Grenache…

2021 Gramenon Ceps Centenaires Le Meme Côtes Du Rhone

La Mémé is a spondiciously excellent wine. It’s so good that Gramenon has grown to #8 in my cellar and all but 5 bottles are La Mémé (those other 5 are A. Pascal, which you should try if you can locate a bottle).

I’ve got to say, you are living the dream. I hope to one day have some moments like this with my kids, but we’re a way off. I give them tastes whenever they show interest.
