Barolo Mystery from May 8th is the 2019 Elio Grasso Ginestra Case Mate’ @$86.70 - certainly a lovely wine and generally around for about $120, though others have it for as little as $100. Posner has it for $90 and is low price in the country. SO not a bad purchase.
Tuscan “Grand Cru” Mystery from February 6 is the 2019 Felsina Rancia Riserva. Not surprising, and I had a feeling it would be this when I ordered. I feel like Rancia can be had in the $45 - $55 range, but I just checked and K&L has it at $39.99, so not much of a bargain in this instance at $39.81 + shipping. Still, I always really like Rancia, so happy to have a few extra bottles on hand.
Did anyone figure out the January 7th Tuscany Legend Mystery 750ml (Tuscany)?
Thanks! I think that was the consensus when the offer went out. Decent deal then
Tom Eddy!
I used to buy his wines back in the mid-'90s. Very tempting offer. I’m going to pass mostly due to space considerations but I bet it’s really good and excellent for the price.
I bought one each of the Tom Eddy wines for old times sake. Seems like the de Negoce pricing of ~$30 for Napa Cabs has deflated interest in 50% discounts.
There’s 1998 Tom Eddy Cab at Wine Bid for $25, uncontested for the moment (1998 Tom Eddy Cabernet Sauvignon | WineBid | Wine for Sale). The history graph shows ranges between $24 and $41. Is it the same Cab?
Yes, that appears to be the same wine as the second one offered. The first appeared to be a single-vineyard type bottling from Pritchard Hill.
I ordered a bottle Pritchard Hill. It is hard for me to estimate the value of these so I’ll call it a day on Tom Eddy…
Seems to be a legit good deal for the Livio Sassetti Pertimali Brunello 2018 in todays email.
Agreed. If it’s your style, it’s looks like a great deal at $50. A retailer near me recently had it for $65 and it’s now OOS.
That Sassetti is a good deal. Still some left.
Looks like this thread has gone quiet. Any smart folks out there with guesses on today’s Chablis 1er Mystery (multi-vintage) offer? Montée de Tonnerre? William Fevre?
the clues would seem to lean strongly into MdT and possibly to Fevre. Assuming it is and the 3-4 vintages are relatively recent (17-20?) would be a good but not crazy deal at that price.
100 Year Old Vines - 95pts - Mystery Wine
I bite for 2 bottles. Wild guess? A Mencia from Ribeira Sacra.
Did they give any indication on how young or old this wine is?
No, but let me just post the offer details:
Pure slate soil.
100 year old vines.
Organic.
No new wood.
No additions, no added yeast or “other”.
Tiny production and VERY hard to come by in the US.
Red wine.
95pts from a studied, particular and highly respected critical voice that claims this may the finest wine he’s ever tasted from this individual vineyard.
A drinking window that will easily pass 2050…
This is not from the Southern Rhone or the Southern Hemisphere.
A wine if immense stature, structure, natural extractive force and mouth-dusting, perfectly ripe tannins and interwoven fruit, the stone and texture shine with unforced force.
If you enjoy beverages such as a combination of a junior version of 1990 Chave Hermitage, 1998 Valendraud, 2002 Saumur-Champigny and the cooling and coiling tones of the Atlantic (plus the deeply etched influence of slate), this is a splurge and adventure that is most certainly worth taking…
Thanks. I saw the offer, I just wondered if you were able to determine any further info than what was clearly stated. Seems tempting, but I’ve rarely been a fan of their mystery offers.
I was thinking similarly, @Mariano_Chiaramonte. Mencia from Bierzo. Maybe Paixar which he’s offered before, not mystery, and he regularly carries other Aurelio’s selections. The ‘21 got 95 Gilman and the ‘20 got 96 WA Rodriguez. It would be a very good buy if anything near that.
Although maybe that’s not “VERY hard to get in the US”.
