The Bourbon Thread

It’s a good bottle, and the story behind it is even better (special forces in Afghanistan post 9-11, with the steel coming from 9/11 debris).

I have a friend of a friend that lives next door to one of the founders (in Montana), and snagged a barrel pick that he made. Great stuff.

I’ve been lucky enough to hear one of their founders speak 3 times where he led a tasting of 3 of their bourbons, and he has always talked about that one. The first time we saw him speak, he brought with him the molds they used and we got a chance to pick it up. Those things were heavy. I have a bottle that he signed, and I keep that bottle and just refill it every time it goes empty with the same stuff.

Has anyone tried the 2025 edition of Old Forester’s 1924 10 year yet?

I have. It’s really solid and worth picking up if you’re a fan of OF. I think it is probably the best OF product I’ve had.

I’m hoping/thinking this is a trend we will be seeing in the next few years with the slow down. 10-12 year age statements returning to regular priced old school brands.

Thanks Trey. You just verified my inclination to get some.

I don’t think you’ll be disappointed - Especially if within a reasonable range of retail pricing. I prefer it to the Jack 10 year and any OF single barrel.

Glad to see this. I just picked up a bottle today.

Hi Andrew- is it easy to find in NY ? Do stores allocate it ? Not easy to find here in FL.

Have never seen it anywhere locally (Saratoga/Albany area). I ended up snagging a bottle online from a place in DC.

Finally got the tasting group back together again and did our double blind. Pours:

  1. Nashville Barrel Co (#592) “The Patriot” 11 yr Willett
  2. Hirsch Single barrel double oaked 10 yr Willett
  3. Willett Family Estate (#5964) 9 yr purple top
  4. Willett single barrel rye (#2605) “I got rye on it”
  5. Nashville Barrel Co “Jung’s 1 Star: Under Construction”

Preference, in order: 4, 1, 3, 5, 2

4 had CRAZY apricot notes on the nose, consistent with trying a similar bottle several years back 5 was a surprise, as I enjoyed it more than a PVW 20 and a Willett purple 10 yr the last time I blinded it. Either way, great to get the guys together again (virtually), and we poured one out for @jbray23 , who ghosted everybody.

I’m generally a big fan, and visited when we hit the Bourbon Trail 18 months back. They have some fantastic picks, and are genuinely good people. The tasting/“bottle your own” experience there is well worth the entry fee!

Anyone seen/had this new collaboration series called Cathedral French Oak? Apparently the oak was sourced from the Loire in the same lot as the oak used to restore Notre Dame. A bit gimmicky but pretty cool story. Initial reviews seem really good too.

I think it’s a gift shop only thing? Also only in 375mls

And $100…
I don’t like cutting down 300 year old trees for much of anything be it a church or whiskey barrels. (I understand the barrels were most likely made from scraps)

I finally made it into the legendary Bourbon Thread! Lately I’ve been really enjoying Old Forester 1920 curious what bottles you all have been reaching for lately? Any sleeper picks I should try next

Longtime lurker, first time poster.

Had this last night in Louisville, Kentucky. It did not suck.

If Armangnac and really good bourbon had a baby it might be this.

Then I looked up the price…

That stuff is pretty decent; interestingly enough, if you want something similar, the l’encantada xo and tattoo series are close.

speaking of l’encantada, after the new distributor, prices have really jumped the shark
