The Bourbon Thread

I’ve only seen the 7 yrs Knob Creek Ryes recently but Bulleit has also released a 12 year 95 proofer Rye (~$55) that has received positive reviews from what I’ve seen so far and might be worth checking out.

Pretty tough to beat JDSBBP Rye and Rare Breed for the $.

I agree with both of those and would add Pikesville which I think is 6 yr (only) but wonderful.

I’m not a huge KC fan or Bulliet (sure they are both serviceable) but I have to admit a 12 yr for $55 is peaking my interest.
Maybe there are golden years ahead!

Is the JD around anymore at retail? I walked into a store when it was released here and they had 3 cases. I only bought one and am kicking myself now after drinking 3

I’ve seen them sitting on shelves on quite a few Total Wines around me (Southern California). It’s a permanent release similar to the regular JDBPs so it should be much easier to find now compared to when they were initially released.

Pikesville is pretty solid, I’m also a big fan of most of the Sagamore releases especially their double oak, sherry finished, BIB and 8-year. And while we’re talking Rye, Old Overholt has also released a 10 year cask strength a few months back that I quite enjoyed, although as Kris mentioned it’s hard to beat JDBPs for the value.

Yes I’ve been wanting to try that one but it’s $100 here which just seemed a bit out of touch?

I’d shop the Luxco book too as they partnered with MGP and they are putting some top class Rye in glass for very fair prices and MGP has some awesome Rye stocks. Rossville Union, David Nicholson Reserve, Old Ezra, and Remus Highest Rye.

Hard to find around here (at least right now) - is it a relatively new product? Hadn’t heard anything about it until maybe 6 months ago

It was a limited release for a while, but now its a regular in the lineup. The SBBP Rye and Regular are some of best values in whiskey even as they creep in price from retailers but definitely have that Jack taste profile with a banana note.

I’m not a huge fan of the typical SBBP Bourbon (two sweet?), but definitely a fan of the Rye version due to the spicier aspect

No arguments there, I think I got it for ~$80 but still pricey for sure.

I tend to look at proofs…some are too high for me and too hot, some are too low and throw off some heavier fruit notes. Never felt sweet, but could understand the term being used as lower proof often has more viscosity for me.

I guess ‘too sweet’ as in not enough of the darker bourbon/leathery/char/oaky flavor

bought the latest small batch Kirkland 1L $18.99

like the glass photo more than the whiskey!

Don’t know whether to ask about the Willett or give you grief for the staged PVW photo bomb.

Leaning grief…

How was the EH Taylor Uncut & Unfiltered? I’ve never seen it in the wild, but how would you say it compares to the single barrel and small batch??

Did Michters sell you a whole barrel? Pretty cool.

No - if you show up at the distillery before it opens, you get a chance to buy/fill a bottle from a barrel they’ve selected. This one was a barrel strength rye, which seems to be a pretty rare occurrence, as most people I’ve seen end up with a barrel strength bourbon (not 10 year).
