Finally spent some quality time with the juice (Old Fitz 6 year BIB Stitzel-Weller juice barreled in 1950) I lucked into earlier this month. Consumed alongside its distant and much younger relative…
I don’t find the 1920 harsh at all; it seems smooth to me.
By the way, I picked up a bottle of the 1920 at the local Total Wine yesterday, and under the bottle was a sign that said, “Limit one per customer per day”. Word is getting around. I guess I’d better lay in a supply before 1920 goes the way of Blanton’s.
I picked up a couple of bottles of Stagg Jr the other day @ 132.3 proof. So I can handle the rough stuff when necessary. The 1920 is readily available locally but the 1910 has dried up.
Heat is a very personal thing. I bought Stagg Jr. when it was first introduced and it tasted like jet fuel to me. I’ve since acquired a taste for higher proofs, but still found a more recent bottling of Stagg Jr. (albeit not this year’s bottling) hot. My personal, idiosyncratic, and anecdotal criterion is whether I feel the high proof — over 120, say — in my chest (too hot) or in my head (balanced).
Edward, you may want to check out some of the Costco around you for item #1645570. Has the 1920 and 100 proof bundled together marked down to $54.97 for the pair. Used to be $64.99 and got marked down.
I’ll give it a shot, but I’m not holding my breath. When it comes to Bourbons, our local Costco has (so far) displayed only high-production, mass-market bottlings.
Was traveling for business this week and found a Bookers 2008-02 for $70. So I drank it with coworkers. It’s high octane stuff, and I didn’t find enough depth or interest to make me want to buy it again. Needs ice and or water in my opinion. Other Barrel proof whiskies carry the alcohol much better than this did. I did bring home a Michters Rye (base) for $40 and an Elijah Craig BP for $62. So much Jesper than Seattle!
It’s exceptional! The guy that runs smoke wagon picks some delicious barrels, definitely some of the best MGP I’ve ver had. If you guys can find them, I’d highly recommend picking up the ECBP C919, makers RC6 and Booker’s country ham, all are exceptional as well, especially the C919. I picked up bottle of the crazy hyped Stagg Jr Batch 12 the other day and was underwhelmed. The ECBP C919 was easily the best bourbon I’ve had last year, barely nudging out the 4R 2019 smble for my favorite release of the year.
